All About Pocket Knives

Hey everybody. I think I might have found a pretty cool valuable knife but wanted to run this past you guys. i think it has a broken pin by blade because blade is loose & the back spring can shift a little. The tip of blade must have been broken at some point. Can anyone help me out on information? Can't seem to find much about it but I know that Iver Johnson made firearms. Thanks!

Nice old knife... Iver Johnson was a sporting goods store in Boston in the very early 1900s... I know they had some knives made for them by Russell but not sure who else... given the condition including blade it is hard to suggest a monetary value for me but given its age etc it does have historical value... maybe somebody can venture a guess as to monetary value but I assume not too much....

Nice catch! I have a Russell fixed blade with thistle handle that is stamped Iver Johnson.Pretty rare stamp. Wonder how many different knives Russell did for them.

In addition to the thistle tops Russell also made Bowie hunting knives for Iver Johnson. The Russell versions of any of the knives are nice but I think the Iver Johnsons are a cut above.

You guys think it be worth fixing the pin or better left in original condition? I know it must have some historical value, don't think many folding knives were made.

Hard question to answer without knowing exactly what is wrong with the knife. Is the back spring okay?

Hey Wayne, yeah the back spring is fine. It will actually slide about 1/4 to the end. I can see that the pin is broken closest to blade which must hold back spring in place? I think if pin was put back it would tighten blade, give blade some snap and get rid of wobble. Is there a way to fix without making it look like it was fixed?

Looks like we're starting a collection of Russell made Iver Johnson knives here.

If Iver Johnson was simply a sporting goods company in Boston, I wonder who made their pistols, because they sold a lot of breaktop revolvers back then.

My Dad and I used to collect American made breaktop revolvers and we had a 38 Iver Johnson that had a folding/locking stiletto style bayonet mounted under the barrel.

I don't think the blade was marked, but I cannot swear to that. I wasn't checking tang stamps back then.

Thanks for the info everybody. Nice looking knives. So I'm thinking I'd like to try and fix this pin myself. Wondering if there is a repair kit that I could buy somewhere...tools needed to work on pocket knives? Thinking I could practice on some beat up knives then give it a try. What do you guys think?
