Moose antler on a Camillus lockback

Several years ago I bought a bunch of Camillus knife skeletons. I believe the model number was 1306. Anyway these are 4 1/2 inches long closed and tang stamped DY. They were purchased at the Camillus auction after they went out of business. I tried several handle materials and just never found one that fit this knife.

This particular knife has been used as a test bed receiving different materials. Most of which I stripped back off of the knife.

Recently I acquired some moose antler. Now compared to deer antler this stuff is unique. Its large and fairly flat. No tines or beams to speak of.

I bought a center palm cut and found the flattest section and cut it to fit. Then I split the piece. Flat ground the cut side and shaped and finished to fit the knife and glued and clamped into place.
Afterwards I used potassium permanganate to darken. Gave the surface a light sanding to give it some mild highlights. After that I sealed the antler with some CA (super glue). After two coats I buffed it a bit. I really like this material on this frame!
Thanks for looking!
Randy

That looks really good Randy.
I am not in moose country, but I will have to see if I can find some at the OKCA show this year.
New handle material is always interesting to me!

Thanks guys! I appreciate all of the positive feed back

Kieth I would love to find some antler thats big enough to do this frame right. I am interested in what you have. If it works out I would be happy to one for you. Let know what you think as well what size deer antler you have. Pics would be good! I have some antler coming that should be here today. Its whitetail and except for a picture I bought it sight unseen. But may be we could work out a trade of some sort with your antler?
