All About Pocket Knives

I noticed a Case pen knife I got which seemed to have been "blued" like a gun barrel is often re-blued. That was what I thought had happened. I now know tat is NOT the deal.

I have two motives here..

1. to honestly find info
2. Direct a little traffic to our Peanut Gang Forum, hehe

Anodizing stainless type steels is very, very, difficult. I doubt whether any normal knife enthusiast has access or wherewithal to the necessary components to safely do that. It's not like parkerizing or bluing. Maybe they have been exposed to acids (citrus, vinegar, etc.) over a long period of time? Remember, it's "stains less" not really stainless.
Are the blacker knives in question marked as stainless? Maybe a proprietary process on the custom?
I don't know what you've got there pardner, but I doubt they are all anodized.

With carbon steel, you can blacken (put a black oxide artificial patina on) the steel with ANYTHING acidic. Citrus, tomatoes, apples, potatoes, mustard, soda water.....ah, you get the point. If you want it really dark, just "nuke" some vinegar in the microwave...using a squeeky clean blade, backspring, whole knife, whatever...immerse it in the roiling, boiling vinegar and watch it turn colors..... Dark...darker...darkest...whatever shade you like or whenever you feel like stopping, it doesn't take more than about 5 minutes. Let it dry...presto!

I'm sure there are other methods I don't know about, but I've used all of the above and they all work to a degree, or some better than others. Different high carbon steels react and color differently.
