All About Pocket Knives

Well, now that things have calmed down for me some, I have been catching up on some projects.

Here are 2 I just finished. The first one is a nice Schrade whittler. The customer wanted to change up the black comp covers, so sent me some Kauri wood. Beautiful stuff. Here's some before and after...




The other one was this HSB. It had a broken pen blade which needed to be removed. The customer also asked for Stellers sea cow bone. I just happened to have won some here in an auction! Here's the before and after...


The sea cow bone is really neat stuff to work with. The natural color and striations reall make for interesting finishes.

I have a piece of Stellar sea cow bone. It is undyed and I have not found a knife that I thought it would look good on.

I just used standard technique...rough sand to smooth, then white rouge for polish. The bone has a wide variety of texture in it. You can see that in the one picture. It doesn't really come out smooth, there's a lot of character in it when finished.

Beautiful Craftsmanship (as always ) If that was New Zealand Kauri you were lucky to get to work with it.
I'll be in New Zealand next couple of weeks - you have prompted me to have a scratch through my late Dad's wood stash - I know there is some Kauri in there.
