All About Pocket Knives

Here is a Case Barlow I restored/upgraded. The red bone on the handle was broken, the picture shows the break but it is out of focus as I was experimenting with my new camera. Another experimental picture was the tang of the master blade, just to show the tang stamp clearly. If I am correct, the tang stamp dates the knife from 1965 to 1969. As I normally do, I disassembled the knife, removed and replaced the handles, and polished the inside of the knife. This is harder than it sounds as they normally did not polished the insides of older Barlows.

I had some nice dark gray giraffe bone that I put on the Barlow.
I was pretty happy to finish result both with the knife, and the pictures I’m getting with my new camera, (after the first two pictures of course).

Nice work Dale!! That grey color really stands out. Looks to be in good shape for a 1965-69.

very nice, I always liked the look of distressed camel bone. that one almost has an appaloosa look to it (to me) if it was a bit spottier

Great job as usual Dale! Beautiful knife...I like those old Case barlows with the nail nick placed forward on the blade like that, and the smooth rounded bolster too, very appealing!

Thanks Mike, I noticed the forward placement of the nail nick and I really like it on that knife, especially in light of the very hard snap on this old knife! It snaps hard like a new GEC! That forward placement really makes it easier to open that blade with those stiff springs.

I was also impressed that on such an old knife that the square end of the tang was still square and not rounded off!
I see why the old Case XX knives are so popular!

Thanks Glenn, the big thing I notice with the giraffe bone is that the color seems to penetrate the bone more evenly that I see in most cow bone. I am not sure why that is, perhaps they use a different dying process or it may be a property of the giraffe bone that effects the dye penetration. Whatever the reason, the resulting depth of color and the unique look produces beautiful handles.
