That's a great hunting auto. I'll bet that could "hold it's own" in the field. I love it!

I think they started making them in the mid 1920s, but I don't know when they stopped the production. Maybe some other forum member can provide more information?

I have a Union Cutlery reprint catalog that is 1923 or older. It is pre-Kabar marking .It has a couple switchblades in it but not a clasp Grizzly.

The Large "Grizzly" is shown in the circa 1925 Ka-Bar reprint catalog (and following Ka-Bar catalogs) and was available for sale at least up through 1940. It was not produced again by Ka-Bar after WWII.

I should have said this before... "All that meat and no potatoes"! I wouldn't even need a "bag of chips" with it. ::tu:: 8)

I've always wondered how the blade lock/release mechanism works on these. I would love to peek inside but imagine that under the button there might be a locking pin with a thinner diameter that allows the blade to release when it is depressed, and maybe there is a hole drilled at the edge of the blade that matches the larger diameter of the pin? Is that anywhere close to how it works?

Welcome to AAPK. These have a different spring and release than do most other autos. The backspring is bent downward and pushes the blade out instead of a separate kickout spring. The button goes all the way through and pushes againet the large side spring that runs along the back stag. The rod between the button and the side spring has a groove in it that frees the blade to open. They don't open as easily as the German and Italian ones do and it takes a little practice to open it easily because your hand wants to hold the side spring from opening so you kind of push against what the button is trying to move. I still love them. Mine doesn't have the hard snap of the Italians and I don't think any of them do, but I've only opened mine so I don't speak with actual experience. Hope this made sense to you and answered what you were curious about. Maybe someone else can explain it better. _____Dave

Thanks for the welcome and for the excellent explanation. I've been a member for a while and didn't realize that was my first post until I read your reply. This is a great forum and I've learned an awful just watching and listening.

I love to visit probably as much as I do collecting so I can't stand to just sit and listen. I wanted a Grizzly for a long time and, couldn't afford to just buy one at the going rate. The one I found was a mess but turned out to be extremely rare because it was made for H.Sears & Son and the experts didn't know there was such an animal. It's all repaired and safely hidden in my safe. I've shared pictures on other threads. Have you visited the First Cup Diner. It's a great thread to get to actually know some of the AARP regulars. ____Dave

Here is my new Schatt and Morgan #71 Express in desert ironwood I just received yesterday. There were 100 in ironwood and 100 in curly maple.
