All About Pocket Knives

So I picked up this ULSTER KNIFE CO scout/camp knife in a lot purchase at an estate sale.
I soak it in mioneral oil for a few days and the RUST laughs at me. Oh, and when I tried to open the screwdriver blade IT WOULD NOT EXTEND to it's fullness. It was scary amount of rust - mreasurable.

I used different levels of sandpaper to arrive at this point......at least it can breathe now and have a shot at cutting....

Last pic shows current status of this vintage knife (scales are in excellent chip/crack free condition).

Ulster looks 10X better. I'm curious about the mineral oil. It doesn't have any lasting effects on the scales?

I've been under the impression mineral oil is useful in maintaining the bone.
I've picked that up (hopefully not wrong) from the REAL knife repairers on this site.

Mineral oil does help put some moisture back into bone and stag.
I often soak a knife for months in mineral oil if I think the bone or stag is real brittle.
It seems to work pretty well.

I have basically the same knife, but mine has an engraved shield. Doesn't look like yours ever had a shield. Curious if that was put on just for the engraving. Way to go bringing it back from near death

Nice work Scott, she looks 10x better! Have you considered buy an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. They can get out the crud that locks up the joints in many cases. Wont get them all. They are affordable to. I think Jerry is found of them as well. With all of the col knives you find you clean them and lube and sell them. It can even put a shine on some bolsters too! Good job buddy!

I have used mineral oil to both lubricate the joint and help restore a dull surface

on the scale. I have never soaked with mineral oil. I apply a thin coat on the

scale overnight and wipe off in the AM.

When buying mineral oil get the fragrance free variety. No need to expose the knife

to additional chemicals which might react with the blade/scale

Man that looks great Scott.

I just cleaned a German scout up today but used a scotch brite pad. Seems to be quicker work than sand paper. Used Flitz after that and cleaned up pretty good.

I use mineral oil on the scales and 3 in 1 on the joints.
