Harold that is a beautiful old Kabar. I hadn't paid much attention to Union / Kabar until I saw some of the knives in the recent Voyles auction. Union Cut Co looks to have produced some very fine knives during the day.

Nice union I agree there were more NA outline union tangs in one spot ( in that auction) than I had seen. Most of what I bid I got out bid on. Thankyou for posting it. However I was mostly looking for the odd ball stuff. The one dogshead that I did not have was one I really wanted. I did get two others, a pearl gents knife I do have a collection of pearl gents and I did not have one with this tang. There was another lot with 2 pearls two were NA Union tangs but they were 2,7/8" and this one was larger. Also this piece is weird it has a gold band all around the knife over the pearl and liner. I tried to show it in the pics but it looks silver???? the other knife was a hawkbill these poor workhorses are often over looked. I love them because they go all the way back almost every company made them and they often tell a story if you know how to read it. if you look at the really early flat bottom version hawkbills, often you will see dents in the flat metal plate on the bottom if the knife still has the metal piece. Most of them have the dents. Those dents often came from hitting the bottom of the knife against the firing to clear and loosen them of the residue of the type of black powder they used then which would foul the guns firing mech . They also carried that style of knife ( besides normal knife use ) because it was perfect to turn upside down and use as a patch knife. Ever notice how the fronts ( hooked points) are usually worn down they were sharpened that way to make using them as a patch knife easier for an upward cut on the material. When hunting or during the civil war a little bit more speed in loading your rifle could be the difference in getting fed or even being first in getting a second shot off during a battle. Besides that you would be amazed at the rare tangs you can get at a reasonable price in this pattern while the same mark in a more sought after pattern would bring several times the money. Hawkbills are often the step child pattern and as such can be a bargain. Sorry I did not mean to ramble. Thankyou for the posting. Regards LT
