octangular nut type of pommell on this
Camillus navy knife served???

Used to bash whatever needs bashing!
I doubt that the octagonal shape has any particular purpose, other than the flats make for a more efficient hammer.

.....you could flatten the blade tip, put a wrench on the hex and use it like a screwdriver!!!................

That's octangular? I thought it was hexangular.

The hex pommel came from the design Marbles submitted to the DOD for the Jet Pilot's Knife.
The Navy adopted Marble's design and then awarded the contract to Camillus.
I suspect the pommel was to break the canopy if you and the canopy both survived the crash intact.

...I think you're right, dale!!, one of my h.s. buddies carried one in Vietnam, and I remember him saying that was what it was used for!!.....
