Vinegar removed the rust and the steel :-0

I picked up this Ontario Knife Co OLD HICKORY Fillet knife for a quarter.......
It was loaded with rust....
the the tip had a pre-bend in it.....
I decided to soak 'er in vinegar and saw the bubbles flowing
, now knowing it was eating not only the rust but also the steel because it was soooooooo thin....
Question is
.....can I cut off that nasty part and make a shortened fillet knife?

That sure looks thin even for a fillet knife. I question whether the results would be worth the effort.

profile away the nastyness. alot of times if something thin is really rusty, it's actually more rust than steel. I have had this same exact thing happen to me on old straight razor blades that are very thin on the edge

Go for it Scott! What have you got to loose? Shortening up that blade might make it a little stiffer too.

Scott, that's a great way to salvage one, you did a fine job!
You need to slip out some where, catch a couple of bass and see how it works
. Ain't nothin' finer than a some filets from some yearlin' bass, salted and peppered, dredged in a corn meal/flour mixture and put in an ol' black skillet full of hot peanut oil. Think I'll go get my spinnin' rod and head for a pond

Scott it looks a lot like a boneing knife now. Is the blade still pretty flexable or is what's left pretty rigid ?

She's pretty rigid, all but the last 3/4".
EDIT: She's pretty firm all the way to the end now, maybe a smidge of play the last 1/4".
