All About Pocket Knives

Sometime ago Wade (Colonel26) sent me what was left of a Case 6217 (loom fixer) for restoration.
As usual I for got to take before pics so here are the pieces after I took it apart.
The knife consisted of all the pieces you see here, there were no handles, just the liners and someone had pinned the rocker pin with brass and hammered it down flat and drilled a lanyard hole in the liners and springs. In this pic you can see a slab of hickory wood that I used for the handles. The wood was cut by Wade's granddad for his smokehouse. Wade can fill y'all in on the details of the story. There were some heavy scratches in the liners that would not come out with polishing. So I started with 400 grit sandpaper and worked my way up to 3500 grit then polished the liners.
Not perfect but a vast improvement. The hickory wood did not have a great deal of color so I added some Golden Pecan wood stain to it before finishing it with tung oil. I chose tung oil because it is supposed to harden the surface of the wood it is applied to. While hickory is hard, it is still al relative soft wood when compared to ebony, cocobolo and some others.
Here is what it looks like now - There was a lot of work on the blades to reshape the master to remove most of the curve in it and I had to reprofiled the very tip of the pen blade to get it to set below the liners and in the pocket.
This old knife had been used hard and put away wet, but I think it will give Wade a lifetime of good service.

I bought the knife with no scales off eBay for $5 + shipping. It's a 10 dot and I figured surely it could be made into treasure.

A year ago when grandma died I moved the old smokehouse to my place. In it was a pile of hickory that my pa, who passed in 1999) had cut and stacked in there years ago. He always raised hogs and made country ham, sausage, middlin' meat etc... It was all salt cured and hickory smoked with wood that he cut off the farm. The last hog killing I remember would have been sometime in the late 80's. So this wood has been in the smokehouse since then.

Now, not only can I pack one of my favorite patterns, but something of Pa's too.
