An interesting OVB

I bought this at a flea market today. It was a two blade jack that looked like a hunk of rust instead of a knife. Anwya, I cleaned it up a little. Not all that interesting, except whats on the butt end. 4 perfectly cut notches in the spring. The owner must have did this. Now is the time to let our imaginations run wild. What did these 4 nothces represent? The number of perople he cut with it? the number of deer he killed? how many times he lost and found it? I love old knives like this. I think the man who put the notches in that spring would be happy to see his old knife got a new lease on life. the pic doesn't show the notches very well, but they were clearly intentionally put in there, and it wasn't factory.
