All About Pocket Knives

I've been collecting less than a year and I have some questions about jigged bone patterns. On the Case website they have color photos of various patterns ( see http://www.wrcase.com/case_college/hand ... tterns.php) and that's what I've been using as I try learn to recognize patterns by name.

This posting was prompted because I saw in Orvet's AAPK store a beautiful blue-handled Camillus jack with what Dale calls the "American Standard" pattern. I noticed that his "American Standard" does not resemble at all what Case calls the "Standard" pattern.

I suspect that it may be that, with the exception of some very distinctive patterns such as peach seed or winterbottom, that patterns may have different names depending on things like region of the country, knife manufacturer, etc.

So my question is: Is there some definitive reference for bone pattern names? Are there in fact widely varying names for the same basic patterns? I know in the big scheme of things it's the pattern itself not the name that's important, but I'm just curious. Thanks.

I think you may have answered your own question, in that all knife makers seem have their own name for their own jigging patterns. The winterbottom and rogers bone pattern seem to be recognized by most as what they are however. I don't believe there is a "rule book" on jigging patterns, or at least I haven't run into one. An interesting and some times confusing subject. Just my opinion however, have fun collecting, as always Terry

Case's "standard" is what's standard for Case and they make that one "in house". Different suppliers have their own standard jigging, so it's not really an industry standard at all. At times, the knife companies will buy their bone from the same supplier that most of us do. They just give it a different color and jigging name. One company's bone stag might be a knife maker's Deep Canyon Bone (hypothetically of course). The old jigging patterns seem to be the ones with consistant names (peechseed, Roger's).
