All About Pocket Knives

Had some spare time so I thought I'd post a couple of photos of paua handled knives.

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy seeing abalone handled knives. Maybe we can start an abalone handled knives thread. Here's a couple.

The following could have been in the prototype example thread.
Actually the first one is marked prototype 1 of 3. Even though it has that engraving on the back, I do not regard it as a proto because it is left over parts from about 1984 (first generation) and the scales are from the 1997 1998 time frame. In that sense it could be regarded as a proto, being one of the first to have abalone shell handles for Bulldog. Same goes for the second one.

The last abalone knife, the stockman was part of a special factory order. 5 were abalone handled, 1 was maked prototype and the other 4 were marked 1 of 5. YES, they made him one marked prototype, all of the regular production and proto knives had an etch, these 5 did not.

Thanks Jim, I like those from Case you have, especially the muskrat with scrolled bolsters.

I'd like to see some others with abalone handles. Give a decade or so and manufacturers may have a real tough time finding abalone shell for handles. They may command a premium.

Man you guys are pulling out all the stops, I really have fallen in love with these Abalone handled knives... They are pretty incredible..

This is what I ended up with.
Looks to me like dog dodo photos.
I keep trying but I get so pissed off.
I think I give up showing my knives off and just look at yours.
Is their a pill I can take so I not get so worked up over not taken good photos?...
It is just me not doing a good job taken photos.
Tomorrow I will try it out side.

Thanks, here are a few more Bulldog knives with abalone. The 3rd one down is a 25th Anniversary prototype Cuttin Horse and it's 5th generation.
Please note, I posted another prototype Cuttin Horse earlier, but that was a 1 of 3 prototype from the 4th generation made from older parts. I stopped buying new Bulldogs after 2005. I hate the Black etch-makes it look like a Rough Rider to me, but it's just cheaper to make.
As far as the marketing goes dated 2005 (or 2006 & 2007) so you can tell it from the older models, AHEM - REALLY NO CHANCE OF THAT!

2005 they also had 10 protos in 10 exotic materials - 100 PROTOTYPES? 2006 - same thing, but I knew that then.
2007 - 20 PROTOTYPES PER EXOTIC MATERIAL Thats not a proto, thats a short run.

Wow those are incredibly beautiful Hukk, I have really enjoyed the abalone material on these knives and others... For those of you out there who have never seen Abalone in person the pictures never come close to the beauty of when you see it in person..

I used to dive all the time and saw literally thousands of abalone shells. I used to say "I'd never buy an abalone handled knife". Look what happened. You're right, pictures do not do abalone justice. When buffed well the colors and iridescene are incredibally deep.

First off.....

I have never owned a real Abalone handled knife, but with all of these beautiful knives, I'm getting that itch... ...they are all super looking.

Secondly, then it would be obvious that this is NOT my knife, but it is worth showing, I believe. It is currently for sale in the exchange section of Bladeforums.

I'm not afilliated in any way...just bringing the picture to show.

That is one fantastic trapper, Don Morrow did a great job. It looks like he used green heart abalone (haliotis fulgrens) which is getting hard to find. The green select grade is still fairly easy to find. I also like the dovetailed bolsters, a simple way to add a custom touch to any knife. I've been doing that on mine.

Well here is a Paua on a 5 1/4 inch Bulldog Anglo-Saxon, have to buy 7 sq. in. to do this. Jeff did this one some time back.

Another is the Bulldog Knife Club of 1999 in heart abalone. 1999 was the first year for the Celebrated Dirk model of the Anglo-Saxon Whittler.
