All About Pocket Knives

I think that I've ask about this type of knife before but can't remember what was determined. Anybody know what this knife was used for?

T.J., I think you did too, or at least someone did because I remember those blades. BUT since the memory machine doesn't work as well as it once did, I don't recall the determination either. SO I've created a folder on my PC named "Mystery Knives" and added the picture of your knife to it. Once it's identified, I'll add that to the folder. (If I don't forget to.)

I'm pretty sure K7K has one.

The big blade looks like a dimunitive froe, for splitting kindling or small shingles.

One would drive it with a wooden mallet.

Charlie may be right. I really don't know but it looks like it would be handy for pruning and grafting of fruit trees or other small nursery stock. So that's my guess. Someone probably really knows though. Where's Dmitri?

I have one that is identical to the OP knife except for the addition of a cap lifter/can opener on the spine.I was under the impression that it was used for either harvesting grapes or opium poppies.I also have two other knives with this shaped blade:a fixed blade with Chinese or Japanese markings and a Parker folder marked 18 Wheeler.The fixed blade is composed of a hardened edge and softer back which would support Charlie's theory of having to hammer on the spine of the blade.Here are some pictures of the three knives.

For what it's worth (more confusion?) there's this, from Levine's 5th Edition, page 229. Not exactly the same, but similar. Browning "Big Game" knife.

That blade is for caping animal skulls or wherever you don't want to pierce the skin.It is pretty much standard on European hunting knives.

And then the one would be a bone saw? And the other with the square end would be what Ray said about caping animal skulls or gutting game? Maybe the smaller curved one is for detail work? So does that make this a hunting/taxidermist knife??????

Jerry: The hooked blade is for removing bird entrails on the stag multiblade.The original poster's knife I have no idea what that hooked blade is used for.The small curved one only opens 90 degrees and that is supposedly the grape(or poppy)harvesting blade.I would assume that the saw might be used for removing larger bunches that the knife won't cut.

Those blades are not the same as on the OP knife, interesting though they may be.

I find it interesting that Parker called his "18 WHEELER".

What could such a blade possibly be used for on a freight truck?

Any long haul freight drivers on AAPK?

I know the knife and that blade is too small to split kindling or create shingles. That's just what it looks like to me. It has the profile, but it's too small for much practical use in that regard.

There is a harvesting tool, I think a "Sugar Beet" knife or something like that, that is similarly shaped, but those are much larger, almost as big as a machete.

Given the other implements on K7K's bottom most knife above, i.e. saw, paring blade, cap-lifter, etc, I'd vote it a camper's knife, which would further suggest the blade in question is for creating small kindling as a fire starter.

Surely, someone here knows what this is.

Charlie: Someone had put forth the idea that the 18 wheeler knife was used to dislodge stones from the treads on truck tires.I suppose it could be used for that but I doubt that was the original intent.
As for the Oriental fixed blade;I wonder if it could have been used to harvest bamboo ;at least small shoots.
The other knife I guess will remain a mystery for awhile longer.The fact that the curved blade only opens 90 degrees may be a clue. I don't know if you recall awhile back on e-Bay there was a flood of these primitive looking knives with a similar blade that only opened 90 degrees;had a stamped steel handle with a long point on the end.They were of Chinese manufacture and were supposedly opium harvesting knives. I have one around somewhere but can't find the picture of it.I'll have to dig it out.

Thanks for the input guys. The mention of grape harvesting/budding seems to ring a bell. If the price doesn't get too high I'll probably buy it just for the HEY of it. I too find it odd the connection of this knife to an "18 Wheeler". I feel fairly sure that it is some type of horticurture knife.

TJ. don't know if this will help or not but I have a Puma 959 called a "universal jagdmesser" that has a similar blade on it along with a saw blade. It was made for the German Forest Rangers. It is a all round type blade used to dress game and what ever else. Kind of like the name implies, a universal knife used for many things. Just my opinion,

The opium connection is interesting but highly unlikely. Before opium is harvested, the outer surfaces of the bulb shaped top of the plant are scratched with a sharp tool. The opium oozes out of the scratches and is later scraped off and collected. That hook would work well for the scratching, and maybe the bigger flat edge would be a scraper. That said, pictures I have seen show much different, extremely crude tools being used along the lines of that Chinese knife shown on the first page, or even cruder. The OP's knife would be a pretty upscale model. Just my 2 cents.
