All About Pocket Knives

STORM DAY so I'm readying my modern folders(MF) for work and play.I've noticed a trend in the general knife thread towards more guys carring MF and I would asume they are getting used Ssoooo how is everyone cleaning and maintaning there modern folders??

I think blowing out with compressed air works great. Im lucky to have an air compressor on hand.
If they are real cruddy, I spray with G-96 (a gun cleaner/lube) and then blow out.
Most times, just blowing out dry will do.

ps- nice double sided diamond 'hone' there. I have the same one and use it almost exclusively unless I need to reset the bevels when I use a 'Lansky' type system. Mine is about 20 yrs old and still works great! DMT products are high quality.
Is the round metal thing an oiler?

Hey Mark Like U I blow my knives down at the end of the work day cause of all the welding dust then strop them, I only need to use the diamond once a month..My DMT I got from L.L.Beans about twenty years ago,,then Touch the blade up with a coffee cup or strop.That is a oiler my Grand-pa gave me ' it's about a hundred years old

I keep up all my knives, Tactical and Traditional mostly with these 3 products.

P.S. DO NOT USE the Simichrome on Knives with Etched Blades!!!

Oh! I forgot to add for G10 Knife Handles, especially colored G10 like orange etc, I found that these work really well for cleaning and shinning your G10.

I use dish soap and hot water. Let 'em dry/ blow out with compressed air and then oil with quick release

thanx Edge I find with oils my flippers stick for about a week so I switched to Remoil and they don't stick,on my AO HALF A DROP OF 3 IN 1 once a month no problem . NOW my axis lock sticks with either

I just use some compressed air and for oil I only ever use Quick Release every couple month as it seems to last the longest of anything I've ever tried so far. If they get really junked up I take them apart and use a little bore solvent and then re-oil them. Had one fall into a mud pit recently and need a good cleaning throughout.

I've used a little bit of everything but Quick Release is my favorite.

Normal "everyday" cleaning is acetone/alcohol for gunk on the blades (sap, sticker residue, grease, whatever ends up there) followed by a coat of Renwax. Nearly all my moderns are some form of stainless, so I'm not overly concerned with corrosion. Compressed air to get rid of pocket lint bunnies or dirt.

Full cleaning (when I feel they need it) is a full takedown and scrub with whatever dish detergent I have available (dawn, usually) and an old soft toothbrush. G10 gets "chalky" this way, so a trick I learned from Chuck Bybee is to clean it, hose it down with WD40 then give it another gentle scrub with dawn to remove "free" oil. This makes it nice and dark again, especially on blasted G10.

I'm a huge convert to Nano-Oil now, after using Tuf-Glide for years. the 85wt nano oil is perfect for just about anything with a washer in it, 10wt is good for stuff with bearings and slipjoints you can't get apart. I do still use tuf-glide in place of oil for knives in storage. It provides corrosion protection even after it dries, and doesn't leave residue like oil does inside the pivots.

Blue Dawn ,hot water old tooth brush and compressed air then lube with 3-1 or Clp.

Blue Dawn and Simple Green are my go to cleaners for 98 % of all my cleaning.
