All About Pocket Knives

Check this rare old sowbelly out! Beautiful, but are my eyes deceiving me or has this one been put on a buffing wheel?

I don't think the blades have been buffed, I would say they have been cleaned by other methods though. I would bet that the bolsters and backsprings have been to a buffing pad though.

I've been liking Remingtons for awhile now and never even saw one of these knives then all of the sudden there everywhere. This knife may be perfect I don't know, but better pictures would be needed for me if I had the cash for one. I know where one is that the owner wants 10K for. I also saw one at the National show in Springfield that the seller wanted 19K+ I can't recall exactly.Both of these knives had etch for what that is worth. It will be fun to watch ebay on this.

Does it hurt the collector value if the blades have been buffed? If so why?

buff or not to buff;
you could look at coins,more or less the same way,there is a big
difference between cleaning a coin your self and haveing it restored by a
reputable sorce, anyone one that as been collecting coins for a very long time can tell if a coin has been cleaned,and that decreases the value
a lot,so remember the if it looks walks and smells like a duck,from
what i see it definently looks buffed, and let me add to this as a point of intrest,the US mint are releaseing the presidentual dollare they started with washington,then adams and so on and so on,only the deceased presidents will appear on the new dollar coins, the change that they made was putting in god we trust ,2007 and e plubius urnum on the out side
rim of the coin,and guess what happened,they found some errors
the rim was plain, now you have people who have found a way,to file off
the markings and sell them as error coins,i know that i am rambleing on
but just like this knife,somebody will more than likely buy it not knowing
that it probly has been buffed,and get screwed,

Some of the biggest dealers in America clean or have there knives cleaned. They do this on some very expensive knives ( cleaned to mint.) If we do this these same dealers will not give us a fair deal. It is a two edged sword. When you go to shows it is sometimes hard to find knives that have not been messed with. I prefer to leave my knives as I get them unless they have been on a grinder or something like that and then I might try to make some repairs. Many of the knives that are seen right here have had some cleaning ect. Many of my knives have been cleaned some by the best pro ever at it, some even rehandled, I would not sell anything without telling the buyer what has been done to a knife if I know. The knives that I have that has been cleaned was purchased that way, by the most part. Some knives that I wanted I could not find any other way. I guess it is in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks of the info. I guess I shouldn't have spent hours making the blades on my old Boker shine.
