All About Pocket Knives

Hi! I am new to AAPK and am enjoying chatting with different people and looking around and learning.
I just have a question I thought you all could help me with.
I was wondering what year did the Buck 309 Companion first come out? I am thinking it is a Camillus made and that There would be no Schrade ones, But I am just trying to pin point what year the first 309's were produced.

No Schrade 309s only 301s and 303s. There are no date marks on Camillus 300s like the post 1985 Buck 300s. You ID them by how they are made. Lets just say the first 309s were 1971. I am about to say on all these dates "about". Sometimes a model changed at the end of the calendar year so do you say the month/year it shipped out or the year 99.8% of production occurred. We could discuss this till we are blue in the face. I do not have one, and I am always looking, but the "first" 309s on the passed around collectors list are suppose to have scale rivets. Now all you folks with a 309 with a long pull and scale rivets can be proud you have one.

Somewhere here on this forum is a thread with the currently accepted list of 300 models. Should be about two or three printed pages. Good Luck.

Okay, thank you. I have one. It has a long pull. It just shows Buck over 309 over USA No "Made in"
I am not sure what you mean by scale rivets so??? I will try to find the thread.

Okay my 309 has the notch on the back, Long Pull, Buck over 309, over U.S.A.
single brass rivet in the center at the bottom near the shield.
The shield is the old knife and hammer shield.

Your 309 was made from 1974 to 1985. That's about as close as you can get it. Buck took the 309 away from Camillus after 1985 and those will have a code symbol stamped after the model number on the tang. There is a thread above showing the code symbols.

This period of Camillus production was a stable era for the stockmen and other folders made on contract by Camillus for Buck. They were constructed by Camillus, sent it batches to Buck, which re-boxed them in Buck boxes. The Lifetime warranty was policy and repair or replacement was made by Buck. I think of the 309 as the 'ideal' jeans watch pocket knife.
