Can't remember when or where I got this little curiosity but it has been residing in my knife cabinet for a LONG time.
The scales look to be some sort of synthetic.At first I thought they might be either bone o ivory and under a bright light and magnification there is a discernable color variation in straight lines(not like French ivory but more random)through the material.It exhibits no odor when rubbed briskly as most plastics and other synthetics do and there is no visible grain.
The bolsters appear to be nickel silver soldered to the steel and pins are brass.The only marking I can see on the blade is what looks like two letter H's connected together.The blade is carbon steel and exhibits some pitting.
I thought it might be some type of medical instrument but given the scoop shape to the blade tip I don't know if I really want to know it's purpose.
I suppose it could be used as a left handed putter for putting marbles on a miniature golf course;anything else would be pure speculation.
So do I have any guesses as to what it REALLY is?

Could it be an inspectors tool/knife for lifting a sample of chocolate or cheese or some other food stuff to ascertain quality?

You should email that to Bernard Levine for his Whatzit column in Knife World Magazine!
I would love to see what he has to say about it, because I haven't got a clue!

It looks like a small slicing or slithering sample tool.

Given the way it's made I would guess a specialized culinary tool. Looks like it would be ideal for cleaning bell peppers and removing melon seeds.

Charlie: I think you may be onto something.Most marrow scoops I have seen look like those tools for making melon balls but smaller in diameter.The size is right and it would work well for a right handed person.By Jove I think he's got it!
