All About Pocket Knives

At one time two giant mail order catalog suppliers, everything from nails to an entire pre-fab house, and of course knives!

The knives were made on contract from various well known knife companies like Utica, Camillus, Winchester, etc. The early knives were well made and made with premium handle material.

If you have them please post them here for others to see

You showed a Wards. Here is a couple with their house brand as the tang stamp, Powr-Kraft. (I have more)

Let's start with a Powr-Kraft that is really a Camillus 80 Deluxe Carpenter's & Whittler's Knife. One of the better examples of the Powr-Kraft 84-11s which of course was a Camillus 72. These don't come up on eBay real often.

Here's a Sears Craftsman scout/camp pattern. I've seen a couple of other Craftsmans like it, but I've never seen another brand of knife with this bail. Over on the scout knives thread someone posted the patent for it a while back.

Here are 2 wards knives that I have.
The 3 blade in stag, possibly made by Winchester. I received it in a trade with Johnnie Rotten. The 4 blade is nice too and pretty sure its made by ..Camillus? What do you all think? Utica or Camillus? I have a couple more to post later!

The Kastor list says Camillus made the Powr-Kraft line from 1939 until close of business but just to be accurate, it does add the caveat "suspect". I suspect you could change that to "confirmed" if you look at the 84-11. There's no doubt in my mind that pattern was made by Camillus.

As far as the "Wards" line? Anyone recognize those, as to the manufacturer?


The Kastor list has Camillus making the "Craftsman" line from 1941-2006 and says it's Confirmed. BUT the 9494s I have all look just like the Ulster 63.
And then there's this bone handle 9494 that may be Schrade/Ulster. I was very happy to get it.

You do have a reputation. My jaw just about hit the floor when you posted you had been carrying that Rough Rider for a year. And then when I saw the Great Eastern you bought and plan to carry this year, I almost fell out of my chair. Where's our Dimitri and what have you done with him?

It's not so bad here in the 21st. We have some really nice stuff and just because it shines, that doesn't make it bad.

Now you're talking my language! I picked up my first two Wards knives at a gun show. I really like them. Here are the two Wards I have and an old 4 blade Made in USA stockman that I'm pretty sure is a camillus made for sears.

Jerry,it's because he has most everything in history(he just posts old stuff) and he is now working up to 2015 models.

Back on topic.

Joe. That's a mighty fine Camillus #80 clone you have there. (top pictures) So far, I haven't seen one of those with a pattern number stamped on the pile side of the main. Is yours blank too?

Here's another like Mark's and Dimitri, same frame and blades but with stag handles and all blades marked stainless.

Now I've had several folks say Winchester made this but I believe it's Utica and maybe even a Kutmaster, it's the same as the bone handle knives they made in the 50's and 60's. I've never seen a Utica or Kut with stag so I'm still in a state of confusion...

Nice one Ken, I have a couple of these and both of them the shields fell out

Apparently when the bail is folded shut it just touches the edge of the shield and after a while it knocks the shield off!
You usually only see the shield missing on the used ones the unused ones or the bone handle ones still have their shield, especially the bone handle ones which are pinned on the plastic handle ones are melted in no pins.
