All About Pocket Knives

Can someone explain to me exactly what the difference is between a blade that is a new grind and one that is not? I have found a definition on this site and I have seen photos of blades on some Case knives from the mid-80s that are described as new grind, but I'm too stupid to get it. Thanks!

it's the angle of the shoulder at the tang. new grind is cut at an angle from the choil forward to the top spine of blade.

I don't think you are stupid at all. Glad you asked the question.
Look at the pic of the tang, below. This is what they call a "new grind". Notice the curve of the grind line. The old grind is cut straight across.

and PLEASE ask more. I like it that your tried to look it up first. That tells us YOUR not stupid.. Just some times it helps to have a big brother or father that you can go to that will help.

Is there an advantage to a new grind, or is it just a new look, something different? Kelley

in 1983, case experimented with the new grind blades thinking they would be stronger than the old style. around fifty styles were produced ending in 1985 when they reverted back to the old style.

i never had much dealings with a new grind but it looks like it would be stronger at the base..

It's my understanding that the squared shoulder on the tang of the old grind creates a stress riser and by using the new grind it eliminated that weaker area and makes for a stonger blade.
