All About Pocket Knives

I just picked up a vintage Russell Barlow 4 3/4 inches long bone handle, single carbon blade.
This knife has Russell over the arrow R trademark on the front blade tang and nothing else. No "USA" or "made in USA" anywhere on the knife. The Arrow is stamped on both sides of the substantial bolsters. Steel pins center pin is very close to the center but not exactly. This knife couldn't have been made prior to the 1895 could it? Can any of you knowledgeable guys help me with this.

This knife was made in Germany around 1971 (note the off center end pin) . The top edge of the back side of the blade was ink stamped Germany and some "traders" removed this mark so they could scam their marks .

Thank you. I have been staring at the knife for a couple of hours it seems and I am with you It was the off center pin that tipped me over the edge. The knife is a beautiful fake.

The knife really isn't a fake . It is just a newer Russell that someone has passed off as an older version (that is if the ink marking has been removed) . Sometimes honest wear can rub the ink off . They are good knives , just not as good as the old ones and are only worth 10% - 20% as much as the old ones in like condition .

I really know very little about Russell knives. French knives I can be of some help though

You can find knives like yours in the $30 - $50 range , but old ones in the condition of yours will probably run $200 - $400 . I have one that is a lock back fish knife (stainless) with stag handles , but it has a patch in the handle and is a little more worn than yours and I have been asking $300 for it (mint condition in a 1978 book lists for $800).

P.S. Lee Roark (same last name as me , but no relation) has a nice one listed in his AAPK store (MY HISTORICAL KNIVES) for $199 , check it out . Lee is very knowledgeable on Russell knives and he can be trusted .
