All About Pocket Knives

Hello folks, I'm new here from North Alabama so forgive my grammatical errors! LOL I'm still new to the knife community but trying to learn what I can where I can. Eventually I want to try my hand at handle replacement since there are so many celluloid knives out there. But recently my grandmother gave me a schrade knife that belonged to my great grandad and the handles are in bad shape. I was wondering if anyone on here would give me a quote on replacing the handles, I don't want to learn on a knife that means something to me. I would like to use this knife to whittle on some Saturday mornings with my knife buddies. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks folks!

I'm kind of the wrong person to be giving you an answer to your question because I'm a bit of a purest when it comes to things sentimental, such as your great-grandfather's knife. My recommendation will always be leave it the way it is. It doesn't harm the functionality of the knife and it belonged to your great-granddad so don't be embarrassed to haul it out of your pocket in front of your buddies. Be proud.

That said, there are several knife mechanics that frequent the forum and all are very capable of putting new handles on your knife. I can think of three right off hand. There are more but I'm having brain blockage so in no particular order of skill.....

Edit: Oops. I didn't look closely at the pictures. The handles look like Celluloid and it MAY be starting to outgass. If that's the case, get it rehandled as soon as possible. I'm not an expert so take that for what it's worth. Someone more familiar with Schrade will be along to give you better advice.

I have some bone from the Schrade Walden factory that would look nice on your great granddad's knife.
I think they are large enough to fit your knife.

I don't think they are celluloid but another kind of plastic they used back then that did shrink violently but not nearly as destructive as celluloid. I have yellow that would look original should you go that route you can contact me @ [email protected]

Thanks for the welcomes folks!! typically Jerry D. I too am a purist on sentimental items, but this one needs replaced to be able to be enjoyed. It will spend most of its time in a knife roll with my other sentimental knives, but every now and then i may break it out in front of the whittlers.

Orvet, typically on any other Schrade knife I would have went with the Schrade Bone, but on this one I think I prefer the option to go back yellow and be close to the original look. I appreciate your response and willingness to to do the work, I will definately keep you in mind on any further work i may need done on my knives.
