All About Pocket Knives

Since I purchased my first neck knife a few month ago I developed quite a liking for these little fixies.
To be honest, more than just an inch or two of blade is not needed where I live. No hunting or survival
here for me, just opening a box or other wrappings every now and then.

After all these little cutters are socially acceptable and can be really Daedalean pieces of art.
To cut a long story short: I am a sucker for neck knives!

So let´s start with my latest acquisition which came from Idaho a few days ago. It was made by Cary Thomas from recycled sawblades from the local woodmills. Cary is a nive guy to deal with and I would by again from him in a breeze!

The necker is about 5 1/4 long and sharp as they come. The little sheath is a piece of art and holds the knife firmly in place. What can I say? I love this knife!

That is a fine looking knife/sheath combo, very handsome. Do you know what wood the handle is made from? My personal preference is not to carry a knife around my neck, but I could definitely see slipping that one into a pocket or pack.

Thank you Mike! The handles are african zebrawood. Sometimes I prefer to put those little neckers in my pockets too. I try to stick to knives that are under 6 inch, so it´s easy.

Nice one Frank! My wife has a custom neck knife around somewhere;I'll have to dig it out and photograph it.In the meantime here are a couple of bolo ties with knives.Only the stag handled one is removeable.I am also including a picture of my belt buckle knives.The Nolen Brothers belt buckle has a removeable knife.The Whitetail buckle has a permanently attached knife but it folds(!)Still trying to figure out that one!
The other buckle the knife is permanently attached and the Parker knife was once held in a belt buckle but the clip broke and like an idiot I threw the buckle away!
Anyway I hope you enjoy them. As an asie;a lot of states here consider a neck knife a concealed weapon.

K7K as usual you've got some fine examples of unique cutlery.

I don't own a neck knife but I do have two or three very small (sub six inch) fixed blade knives. They just don't have sheaths set up to be worn around the neck.

Thank you Phil.My first bolo was the custom made Jim Turecek mini fighter.I don't think Jim makes them anymore as he told me they were more difficult to make than the full sized ones.I had ordered mine from him after seeing him wearing one at the Northeast Cutlery Collectors show.
He said it would be about 8 months and would cost $400;bearing in mind that was around 1990. As it turned out it took nearly a year to get.The biggest problem he had was finding the stag that looked to be in scale with the knife.Just before the next show he called and asked if I would be willing to sell my knife to another customer who really was in a hurry to get one and he would pay me a hundred dollars OVER what I had paid for it!
I declined saying I would rather have the knife.I think I surprised him a bit.

K7K you got yourself some unique knive there! When I was younger I had a belt and on ot´s buckle was a removable pocket knife. It´s long gone though....
A knife with a fixed blade up to 12 centimeters (that´s a tad under 5 inch) is legal here in Germany is may be carried in public. If you find yourself cought up in a riot or a public event the police may take it from you though.

Cold Steel calls "The Spike" a neck knife. Hmmmm I'll let you make your own judgment.

They recently re-engineered them. I have one of the old ones. This one is 8" with a 4" blade. They are sharp little devils.

Looks like he ruined a perfectly good piece of meat. The cheap boot deserves it though.....

I try to stay under six inch with my neckers. Don´t want to scare people more than necessary...

Skipper, I don't know that I agree with them. The Spike seems a bit long to me for a neck knife. I'm just sayin' that's what they call it.

Maybe they call it that because it's considered the right size for removing a person's head from his NECK!

So to say a "de-necker"...

Here's a couple more for you Frank.The black handled one is a true neck knife while the other two are small enough to be considered as such but cane with regular sheathes.

Unfortunately it´s dark when I get home from work, lot´s of thing to take care about on weekends and my ministudio is in use at my workplace. I will try to shoot a few more neck knives this Sunday....

Thanks Will;that was the first custom knife I ordered specifically for myself.The maker;Jim Turecek of Derby CT is one fine craftsman and a great person as well.
As I had said before;what amazed me about it was that the stag grooves were in scale with the size of the knife. Jim told me that he went through a lot of stag just trying to find what he considered an appropriate size for his neck knives.Another thing was the tiny spring and button on the underside that retains the knife.Fitting it properly was extremely difficult as it was so small.He said that making one of these tiny fighters was far more difficult that making a full sized version. I don't think he made very many of them;he had one of his own.minemand the one he was making for another customer.I got the impression that he wouldn't be making many more of them.

Sometimes I find it a lot handier to have a small sized knife hanging from my neck than trying to fumble inside a pocket for it. You even need two hands most of the time to get your pocket knife ready for action. I never wear it for decorative reason. I found it quite astounding the neck knives are said to be used mainly for that reason.

Ok, here as promised more of my neckers:

The first was made from a Bulgarian knifemaker for me, Nikola Kovachev who is a great guy!

#2 is the Bark River EPK which stands for "emergency preparedness knife", some kind of "last resort" knife. It made me laugh when I opened the parcel at home and I don´t think that I would be very happy with it in an emergency - it´s much too small for that. For EDC use in urban surroundings it´s big enough though.

#3 is a '"cheapo" from Taiwan that isn´t a cheapo at all! It came for a mere 35 Eurodollars and is even made from D2-steel and very well at that indeed! Great size and fits nicely into the hand. I really recommend it for EDC.
#4 is the Boker Rambler neck knife. Made from 440c and nothing special apart from the fact that it is very affordable and has the right size for me. I still considering to get one with stag handles as well.

#5 is the mother of all neck knifes: The Rockstead Chou! Made from the japanese super steel YXR-7 the knife just needs a stropping every now and then and a resharpening just after three (3) years! It´s sharp as they can get and a real and worthy successor of the vintage Katana swords! Hardness is higher than 65 Rockwell! Only drawback is that it is expensive, rare and needs to go home to Japan for resharpening.

There´s a #5 in the cupboard that was forged by a german knifesmith and waits for some handles that I will still have to make if I find the time....

I carry a hunting knife on my belt and a pocket knife or two in my pockets. I get enough strange looks and some comments from people now when they see the hunting knife I am carrying

I can just imagine what people would do if I started carrying a knife around my neck!

No more good flea markets around here anymore What little there is is mostly modern junk, if you are lucky every once and a while you may find something or maybe at an antique shop. Believe it or not there is better stuff on fleabay and for less money

I hear you.My only problem with e-Bay is if a seller will only do PayPal I don't bid.Never had an account and I haven't had a credit card since 1992 by my own choice.Worst company was Discover.
There are several antique shops in the area that I frequent and the owner's know what I collect and will usually set an item aside and call if they think I might be interested.One is a former knife collector so he knows what is sellable and what isn't.I also have several customers who look out for them as well.
The only flea market locally is a summer operation only and rarely has anything.

This is why I stick to very small neck knives. After all I don´t need more than a point and one inch of cutting edge most of the time.

That´s interesting! Same here in Germany: You´ll only find modern junk, old clothes, plastic toys and cheap crockery. The great time of flea markets is over, sad but true......
