All About Pocket Knives

On first look, it seems obvious . . . it's definitely stag.

Then when I turn it over, I think, "But that looks like green bone." I'm leaning toward thinking it's stag, because that one side looks so obviously like it. But the other side looks like knives I have that are definitely green bone. What do you think? Here are some pics.

I agree with CCBill.....that is stag, with natural figure...doesn't look like jigged or stagged bone.

I think stag is kind of like ice cream,IMO. It comes in different base colors like light green, brown, red, or sort of white, because of nature, of dying it, of torching it, or, well, it just does. Different figure as well. I think that is one of the reasons we like it. It has variety, but it's all still ice cream, and it all tastes good.

This is an XX . . . 1940-65.

I'll get some better pictures of it on here after work today. Thanks for all the info guys. And yes, it's a nice knife, but as you can see, the blades have some pitting and it's been well used (blades are not full).

I'm gonna have to go with the crowd, there's too much natural character for it not to be, so I vote STAG!!

Here's another one. This one I'm fairly sure is green bone, but with the light colored handle on one side I can't be sure. Did they do jigged stag back then?

Eric, love that hawkbill! yep, the hawkbill looks like green bone to me. that would look good in my hawkbill case

Actually the hawkbill has a few problems . . . might be something I should have you look at, MM! There's absolutely NO snap to it and the blade's a bit muffed up. So, that's greenbone. It looks mighty similar to the stag of the 5265 in terms of color . . . it's just that this one is jigged.

I'd love to take a "look" at it .

seriously though, the snap could be a problem, hard to tell if it's anything major until it's in hand. looks like some pretty deep grinder marks in the blade, that could be a problem depending on how thin it is ground. let me know.

P.S. If you're just looking to unload it, let me know, I'd be interested in adding it to my collection.
