All About Pocket Knives

I keep bumping into this knife online, and am starting to develop an unwholesome attraction to it.

It's a Weidmannsheil brand damascus, twin spring muskrat - 3 7/8ths". It's $139.00 - but it is pretty steel.

These are made in the Olbertz factory, Solingen; if I've got it right. Same stable as Fight'n Rooster, Bulldog etc. This one is in buffalo; though they are also available in stag and some other variations too.

what I am trying to uncover is the quality of the damascus used here. A nice carbon combination would of course be lovely. (and would burden my credit card immediately :rolleyes:)

It might be nothing of the sort, of course.

Has anyone any insights?

I have 2 or 3 of those Damascus bladed Weidmansheil knives, they most certainly are carbon, and most definitely not stainless. They seem like pretty decent knives. Mine are a few years old now though, I'm not sure if the new ones are as good. From what I hear the quality at Olbertz is hit and miss these days.

I don't have any damascus Wedmansheil but I do have a few scattered in my collection. I love them all. Very well made knive. I haven't bought any lately under the Weidmansheil Sporting Knives banner but I have drooled over a few.

The reason I ask is that I recently had delivered one of those Vintage Knives 1902 Moose pattern swell centres. It is nothing short of sublime, and I'm considering ditching a lot of my collection now (well, perhaps not - but it is some knife).

I did think that the Weidmannsheil would make an intriguing alter ego to it.

Is the F&F as good in the Weidmannsheil as in the VK?

I sure do like that Muskrat. The horn that the Germans use is really nice looking.

That sure looks alot like the Raindrop damascus on the new Case knives. Are those buffalo horn handles? Nice looking knife.

I can't comment based on experience, but it looks great to me . I think you need to buy it and then provide a detailed review. s-k

Forensic Jim - you are right it does look similar to the Case (which I also fancy something rotten). And s-k, it looks like I just about scraped together enough on BB to fund this one :)

The story on the damascus seems complex though - rumours have it that these are made of old bits of knives made in the1990s (who really knows).

Is the Case steel the same perhaps.

But it is so clean looking. Do you think it might be some of that lovely damasteel - that is usually heat treated pretty hard - which doesn't sound like Case's way in the world.
