All About Pocket Knives

Hello,
I was wondering about the Chinese Schrades. How is the quality of these knives? I hear they don't stack up to the American made knives but I was wondering how they hold up to everyday work. Do they even hold an edge?

If that did not help you I will put it this way.

If you loose a lot of every day users and you have a grinder close by to sharpen the blades. Then if you can get 10 cuts out of the edge before you resharpen it. China made knife might be just what you like cuz they are cheap.
I feel a dull knife is dangerous and it also debends on what you are cutting.
Buy one and give it a test they are cheap and you will learn very fast if they fit your liking....

As a collector of Schrade & associated brands, Imperial, Ulster, Hammer Brand, Frontier, etc., with about 500 knives that fit that category (plus a few hundred knives that aren't Schrade related), I am not a fan of the Chinese knives bearing the Schrade name. I got one by accident on ebay (should have read it better). The fit & finish of the knife (a 5UH) was very poor. The grinding of the blade left a lot to be desired. The blade also felt like it had sand between the tang & liner. I could feel it grind as I opened & closed it. I threw it in a drawer, where it sets to this day. I haven't found someone I dislike enough to give it to.

That's a good price if it's American made. How about Frost knives...Are they American made? Another concern is loss. I'd hate to buy a nice Buck or Case and lose it.

I went to the store today where they have been selling Schrade and other brands for several years. I could not get a clerk to open the knife display as I wanted to see if the Schrades they had are from China or USA. I could see a little thru the glass and the blades did not look like the original blades did. These had a satin finish on them and not much of a nail nick and the name on the blade was not deeply stamped. The prices were high as the original Schrades they had before. I am going back over this week and I sure want to get a look at them up close. I really doubt that they are the USA Schrades tho. They are high priced and that may be old stock under the counter. I hope they have some old USA Schrades left...

I went to the local sporting goods store and found a bunch of old schrades in the counter. I got 5 of them at %25 off. I was thinking of selling them and the more I look at them, the more I want to keep them. I'm certainly not using them .....they are still in the boxes with the paper work.

What did you get if you can show photo's or give us the numbers on the tang.

Do they have any folding hunters still there ?

I can use a new 4 " or bigger folder Schrade.

No large ones there, I looked but I took what they had. Here's the numbers:

834UH
804UH
285UH
There is one more but I don't have the box. I think it's an 80UH. Not sure I can't see the tang. It's a stockman and it's about 2 1/4" long, closed.

The way you can know for sure if they are American made is look at the tang........If it doesn't say USA, is is probably from China.

I got a LB7 as a gift.It turned out to be a Taylor Schrade made in China.When I opened the box and pulled the knife out the pins fell out of the handle.I took the knife back to the shop where it was bought and was told that they no longer gave refunds on these and would only exchange the knife.I took the new knife home and found that the handles stand an 1/8 of an inch high of the bolsters and the knife feels like its going to break every time its opened.As someone who owns 150 + USA made Schrade knives I'm embarresed that Taylor is selling these with no QC as Schrades.It is probably why you can buy a china made knife for 19.99 that I pay 50 or 60 dollars for a USA version of.Arnold

That's Very Sad! To have the SCHRADE name reduced to that

level.

What I do , since my memory can't hold much,is keep a list of the sellers that sell that junk and update it every time I hear of a new one.If you buy fixed blades after checking the knife check the sheath.The new ones are easy to spot.Arnold
