Barlow Knife

I bought a Barlow knife for $5 at a garage sale, needs some work as the scales slide and the knife is "loose", was thinking of taking it apart and learning from it, making new scales for it and putting it back together. Has anyone got advise or input?

Not all Barlows are built alike.
Some pictures of the knife would help us advise you.

Sounds like a shell handle knife. Those are a totally different animal from "standard" pocketknife construction.
As Dale suggested, pics please.

Orvet has an excellent tutorial posted on taking a knife apart. Study that information and see if it applies to your knife. If you do have a knife with shell handles it isn't rocket science to get them off. Replacing the scales would mean replacing the entire side from a knife just like it or doing a radical modification and putting bolsters on the liners and then new scales.
