All About Pocket Knives

Since nobody has posted on here for a while I thought I'd post a few of my favorite fixed blades.My six 171UHBHs.The oldest is #0859 and the youngest is #10,433.It is the highest number I have been able to find and has the Schrade-Walden etched on the blade instead of stamped like the others.Thanks Arnold

The serial number of my user 171 is 39651. It's not the birds head pommel, and has the 'pebble finish' on the guard where the serial number is. on the other side of the guard is the Uncle Henry signature. It's dark with age and has plenty of pits, but sharpens up great, rides on my hip in a Paul Long custom sheath.

I'm pretty sure that Paul has been saving Scorpihydes, chewed to proper texture, by mythical virgins (are there any other kind?), just to make that special sheath for you Arnold. You should give him a call when he returns from Blade (?). Tell him...El Lob..........o sent you.

I'll bet sheathmaker could make you a nice sheath...and still have enough hide for a hunting vest.

Even though that looks like homemade tackle, the score looks to be worthy of Boone and Crockett.

I got this one a while back and have some questions about it.As you can see it is a different 171UH.Instead of the birdshead or the square end pommel it has a totally different pommel.It also has the leather handle like the 147l or the 148l.The guard has been shortened and changed to nickle silver.It is also pinned through the pommel like the birdsheads and the Schrade stamped squareends were screwed through the end of the pommel so someone had a lot of work to change it to the pinned type.Has anyone seen a similar knife.This seems to be to well made for an amateur.Thanks,Arnold

What does the tang stamp say?

The tang stamp is the usual 1974 stamp saying Schrade,USA,171UH.I thought this was a rehandle till I saw the way the pommel was attached.To change the regular Schrade square end to this one would take a lot of work.The Birdshead pommel is pinned but they are all stamped Schrade-Walden.Arnold

Thanks Dale.I think that one of the reasons I collect Schrades is that every time I think I have one of each I find another.I have 8 different patterns of 147 or 148s and I'm still finding new ones.I have 3 different paterns of 171s and I'm still looking.That what makes it fun.Mabe this the always elusive one of a kind proto.One can only hope.Arnold

When it comes to Schrade why stop with only one ?

I actually have 7 of the square ends I bought to get the serial numbers.It is how I proved that they started over whith the serial numbers on the square end since I have close to duplicate numbers in both the birdshead and the square end.Your right,there is no such thing as too many Schrades.Arnold
