I bought this today at a yardsale. Tang stamp is: ARMY KNIFE over UNION. The spoon is aluminum so it has been replaced. Anybody have a clue as to old this may be? Civil War era?

Do you have the other half?
The spoon is nickle silver.

There was one that looked an awful lot like that one whistlin through e-bay the other day as half a slot knife with the knife missing.

I don't want to sound stupid, but what do you mean by "other half"? I didn't realize the spoon was nickel silver, it is different than the fork so I thought it was replaced

This one just has a spoon and fork. Doesn't appear anything is missing.

David,
Does the other side of your knife have a wood handle? If you could post another picture that would be helpful.

I think they are saying that your knife should look like this one........

Yes, the other side is wood, but a different wood. Appears to have been replaced. Do you think the spoon is original?

It looks like that one, but no knife blade. Only spoon and fork.

If you look at the eBay listing I linked you will see that there are two 'halves' that come apart. Your knife is half of a hobo/slot knife that has had the slotted half covered with a newer piece of wood. Originally your knife was two halves that attached to each other, which is what MB was asking about/saying.

Thanks guys, now I understand. To bad I don't have the other half. But only paid $10.00 for it.
