All About Pocket Knives

Hay Guys-
Can you help me on this knife. There is something bugging me cant put my finger on it. Hope the person I got it from is not on this forum, or if they are ..it always pays to be careful and you will earn a good customer if all is OK.
So here we have a CASE XX 1940-1964 Green Bone 6299 quite an expensive purchase so I need others opinions. If you look there is no model number stamp only "CASE XX" . Now this is not unusual for some knives. Second I see the shield looks a little off center with the stamp and the shield is not placed fully in the hole. Third if you look at the round bolster on the back side of the knife it is halfway rounded and then straight on the bone the rest of the way. Lastly, the bone looks more brown than green. I have a Green Bone XX Toothpick and you really see the green tint there. So is it the real deal

Knife looks fine to me. Very nice green bone. It is common for the early XX knives not to have pattern numbers. That knife is actually scarcer in XX than in Tested.

Wow..Thanks Steve and Larry. I am happy about the knife, and I am glad I don't think I know everything and can reach out and ask for help. I learned that lesson the hard way many times before I pulled my head out of my a$$. You know how you can be when you are younger. If I listened to half the stuff my dad told me I would not have to pull so many arrows from my butt as a young man.

Why do they call this green bone? It seems to not be green in color at all.

My understanding is that the brown dye that they were using tended to put a greenish hue in the color (with a lot of variation). Some came out more greenish than others but they all are considered green bone from that time period if that dye was used. It wasn't actually being dyed green.

Now that's my understanding and I am sure someone else can explain it better than me.

It will look more green in person rather than in a photo, but remember its olive green, not the kelly green and mint green that Case makes today.

Thanks Steve, the green bone of today was my comparison.

I've been told in the past by some very notable knife historians that the term, "Green Bone" should only be applied to Case knives from the period that particular dye set was used.

All other knives with green colored handles should be called something else, such as "green colored", "Green tinted", "appearing green" etc, etc.

Sophisticated Case collectors claim ownership of that "Green Bone" appellation.

And I agree, most of it looks light brown.
