Pen Knife Display 2nd Attempt

Still working on a display for some of my pen knives. You may recall that I had a version a few weeks ago with the blades 1/2 open. Based on the majority opinion that this was not good for the springs, I started over. This way I get more in the case. Once it is relatively finalised I'll construct an identification key to go with it. These are pearl, ivory, natual bone and 1 or 2 faux ivory. Constructive feedback will be much appreciated.

You all most have the Pearly Gates that go to Heaven.
I have seen it but it was closed for us tourist...
I think try making them all PEARLS only.
Get more pearls, Farmer just got 2 nice one for you..
Yes one open blade looks good. I also like them at that angle too. Try to space them out more. (to many looks to full). Do not try to make a display as the sellers at show do.(room to them is $$$$). Look at most COMPANY displays. They do not show all they have in one display.

Thanks for the responeses guys. Ken that is wise advice. I think you are right that maybe it is too crowded. It is a work in progress. Thanks

s-k, the angle suits the display case nicely. I display my knives one blade open, also, and I like them that way. I cringe now when I see knives displayed "under tension". Very nice!
I understand Ken's point about not crowding, but I don't find yours too crowded. I like to compare knives, side by side, and so like the proximity.
Can't wait to see your Hawkbill display!!

Nice! I love pen knives but I do not have very many of them. Looks like you have a nice collection of them. Thanks for the pic.

Hello SK,
That is a fine display of your fabulous knives, I personally like the current presentation but it all comes down to personal preference. Do you have the room for more displays to make more space for your knives or do you need to consolidate.??
Either way your collection is outstanding and a joy to examine..

very nice SK, I like it. The more displays I see the more it makes me think I should display some of my knives. I just purchased a I-XL Corn knife very similar to the one in your photo (bottom row 7th from left). It has real ivory, butthe left handle is cracked in two places and is missing a large piece. May need to find an ivory piano key.

S-K,
It looks fine to me the way it is.
One open blade is a good way to display them.
I love them displayed on a diagonal like you did.
Four thumbs up-
Dale

After my nap I had an IDEA..
I will try to put this in words hope you under stand my words.
The 2 brightest Yellow ones in the center of the display.(row 1 and row 2)
Then fan out with the other yellow or yelowish ones left and right of the center ones.
Make the color go from yellow center to WHITE Pearl on each side of the center ones, and both rows.
Just try it see what that looks like. a color full fan..?? Yellow toning to Pearls on the ends...
I also noted that you lined them up with all the joints making a straight line. Kool move let the blades heights go more or less. Keep this line like you did.

Hello Smiling Knife

,
That looks cool the way it is.
My only suggestion would be to buy/find more knives and display cases. That way you could keep your pearls/organics in one and composite/celluloids in another.

Thank-you all for your helpful feedback. I may take a few kinives out and see what it looks like with just a little more space. 9-ball.... it is very nice to see you back online. I agree with you, I need more display cases. Upnorth, either a hawkbill or jack knife display will be next. Thanks again.

I have a question for you, s-k; How do you fasten the knives in? Or do you?
I use permanent magnets, so I can hang the displays like pictures. This takes up little room, but lets you view them easily. I've attached one of mine here, which many of you may have seen before. It is vertical; hangs on the wall, and it takes only minutes to change the knives!
P.S. I no longer have blades part way open in the display!

This case has a foam insert and it is the pressure of the glass pressing the knives into the foam that keeps them in place. I am intrigued by the magnet system. How does that work? Thanks

I too like the magnet idea, I have meant to ask you before, where do you get your magnets?

The cabinets are built by a friend of mine, like a shadowbox with a door. I have 12 ga. galvanized steel cut to fit inside, and contact cement (spray) some thin tough stain resistant cloth to it, wrapping the edges over a little.
Then I open the door, and mount it in the back with a tiny cove molding aroud the edge. So you wind up with a cloth-covered steel insert. I get the magnets here;
http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page. ... 42348&ap=1
I buy them 2or300 at a time, and most knives will mount with 4 to 6 3/8" magnets (2 stacks of 2 or 3 each). Tiny (pen) knives use 1/4" magnets. Big hunters use 1/2".
I lift them off the wall intact to go to shows, then pop them back when I return!
