Classic Trivia Round 2

Okay...were gonna do this week a bit different. Tomorrow around noon EDT I'm gonna post this weeks question. Figure by announcing it now it will give everyone a chance to be on line when the question is posted. The winner will receive a new knife. I like to wait to see who wins before I pick the knife out. That way I can try to send one that will be a pattern or brand that they like.

Okay...here we go, I think this one will be pretty easy as well. It's a two part question:

1. Name the Patterns and pattern numbers for the knives the were stamped "XXX".

2. Those patterns also have one other thing in common, what is that?

Good Luck

8) The "XXX" marked, 2100 Saddlehorn, 488 Congress & 394 Gun boat were born. WR Case & Sons owned the tooling for these knives and the infamous 254 Trapper.

Case made these 4 patterns of the Classics under a subcontract from Blue Grass Cutlery.

Wow Mitch...that was quick. I'm gonna have to make it tougher next week. Shoot me an email with your address and let me know what kind of knives you like. I'll try to find something that fits.

Since this happened so quick I'll do a bonus question that likely isn't as easy.

Does anyone know who thought up the idea of the "XXX" stamp?

Perry,

I'll guess Jim Parker. But, that is a guess.

8) Perry; Thank you so much! for your genorosity. ::tu:: Rather then

send you my address , I would like to donate this knife to Bryan for the

June AAPK knife give away. Bryan has been so generous to all of us and

I would like to repay his kindness in some small way. So check with

Bryan on what would be a good give away knife. If you guys would like to

upgrade the knife I will gladly pay you the difference for it ::tu::

Thanks again for your Kindness

That's vey generous of you Mitch ::tu:: Since it will be one of the monthly knives, I'll see if I can find a nice Classic to donate.

Bill,
It's logical to think of Parker but it wasn't him, although he did own Case at the time and had them made. I'm gonna wait a bit and then will post the story behind the "XXX".

Thanks Perry, for the info, as I'm way out of my league when talking about Case, or especially the Classic knives... ::nod:: ::doh:: ...but I do enjoy seeing, and hearing/learning about them, for sure.

Mitch, you are a good man, and I'm glad you are part of AAPK. ::tu:: ::tu::

You too Perry.

Perry... I can't remember his name but wasn't the person that thought up the XXX tang stamp the then president of ABCA who took the idea to Jim?? Gary

You were very close Gary! The first one's were made for the ABCA and Bruce Voyles was the president. Paul Davis had called Bruce and told him he had a great idea for a club knife and it was the XXX. So the original idea came from Paul Davis. Bruce went to Jim Parker, who owned Case at the time, and asked him for an exculsive on the stamping for 5 years. Jim agreed and they decided to make the 62100 Saddlehorn.

Two weeks later Jim called Bruce and said that was way too good of an idea to just make one knife and Bruce agreed. So Jim started to have all three patterns made with the XXX stamp. The rest is pretty much history and they have become the most collectable of the Classic line.

I have been told that Case was approached a few years later about making more of the XXX stamping and they stated that they would never do that stamp again. I don't know if that's a true story, just something I was told.

Since Mitch was kind enough to donate the knife he won, I've picked out a 6391 Moss Bottom Bone Prototype to send to Bryan for the monthly give away. You guys are so on top of this stuff that I'm gonna have to come up with a tough question next week.

Men, You are the greatest. You have gone above and beyond. I sure appreciate it and I'm sure all of the members feel the same 8)

I have not disclosed it yet, but Perry sent a real nice Schrade knife a while back for us to give away for a monthly drawing. I'll leave it up to him and Mitch to decide which we should give away first, or if we should do both at once. ::ds::

I'm hoping we can do Perry's Schrade first, and then the Classic the month after that ::shrug::

What does everyone think?

A 6391 Moss Bottom Bone prototype! That's just plain awesome. ::groove:: I can't thank you guys enough! ::tu::

Bryan

PS Nice XXX's. Very interresting info as well.

playing the same number for 2 years now and it hasn't come up. It would

just be my Luck I would finally hit it when I was trying to give something

back to our community ::shrug::
