All About Pocket Knives

Been watching this one on e-Bay for a few days.Tried to buy it with postal money order;even offered cash and the seller wanted only PayPal.I don't have a PayPal account(and never will)so I asked a friend of mine to buy it for me.Should be here in a week or so;then I'll know for sure.
The celluloid looks like it has been degrading for awhile and hopefully I will be able to control it to the point that the scales won't have be replaced.If the stamping is what I think it is,it is a rare stamp to begin with and one that I don't have.
Rather than posting a pic of it I will give you the auction number and see what you think as I don't know how to kink auctions to this site. The number is: 131117350357.

That is my thought also Dimitri.As I recall Lackawanna Cutlery Co was a relatively short lived(13 years according to BRL)company and a relatively rare stamp.I have heard of the company but have never seen one in person.It looks very similar to the letter openers made by Aerial Cutlery Co(I have several of those);I'm wondering if they contracted them from Aerial.Whatever the case I think I got a good one.

You can have PayPal account linked to a credit card.That way you never have money in a account.

I have not had a credit card since 1992 for very good reasons;which would take way too long to explain.

Ihteresting that it is the S&M dye works in a keystone. Did Schatt and Morgan happen to own a Dye works at some point?

I'm not sure;that would be an additional plus if that were the case.I'll have to do some research on that.

No relation to S&M but Lackawanna has a long history involving several companies from the same town. I did an article on them a while back. Nice piece of PA cutlery there my friend. They were known for picture knives, no relationship with Ariel that I know of in my research.

Thanks for posting the pics Dimitri.I just sent off an e-mail to the Philadelphia Free Library to see if they could check their business directories for the name and it's approximate life span.I found (on e-Bay)a match book cover with the name on it as well and it gives the address of the business.

In 1921 they, (Lackawanna), had an explosion in the celluloid room that burned the plant down

After that the knives were not produced but assembled from parts purchased from different suppliers.

Well that might account for why it looks a lot like the Aerial Cutlery Co letter opener knives.I should be able to tel reasonably easy once I have it in hand.I have several Aerials.

Thank you(and all who replied)for your comment David.I just re-read one of BRL's guides and he mentioned Lackawanna as a maker of picture handled knives.I know I will be happy with it as I have no other knives by them.

Nice! I love them picture handles. Im no real expert on celluloid, but i have quite a few picture handles, and i think they will be ok.

Well it came today and I wasn't disappointed.The celluloid is actually in great shape and there is a minimal amount of corrosion on the knife overall which is slowly being taken care of.Sorry for the bad pictures.

Just got this LACKAWANNA CUTLERY CO / FIGHT'N ROOSTER.

My newest addition is a curious find. Spent more than I should or normally do but I had to find out more about it. It was listed on the Bay as a Fight'n Rooster Solingen but the pictures the seller had posted of it only showed a Lackawanna Cutlery Co tang stamp. This really got me curious about it so I sent a message to the seller asking him to clarify that for me. Which he did not do. So to find out more about it, I had to buy it. Yes, "Curiosity killed the cat." so to speak.

Anyways, the answer to the question at hand is..., it has two tang stamps. One Fight'n Rooster Solingen stamp on one of the secondary blades & a Lackawanna Cutlery Co tang stamp on the main blade.

So what does this mean? Your guess is as good as mine but my guess is that Fight'n Rooster produced these in Solingen (it came to me from a Solingen address, wrapped up in a Solingen News Papier) & somehow got the rights to use the Lackawanna Cutlery Co brad name.

Either that or it's some sort of counterfeit but I am guessing my first guess is correct.

Anyways, real or counterfeit, you be the judge. It's a (in my book) "HUGE" 4 1/2" Whittler, NOS, no box, with stag handles. The 2 secondary blades have 1/2 stops, while the main blade does not have one.

I took a lot of pictures of it so I'll need to make two posts to show em all.

Thanks for the offer Buddy but one with bone handles & in good condition would cost you an arm & a leg. At least$100 but probably more like $150 -- $200. Don't worry about it. Some day I'll post the right knife & somebody will trade with me. Maybe. Maybe not.
