Questions for the Schrade Experts

OK...I've decided my next slippie will be a peanut or peanut-ish. Case is an obvious choice, Schatt&Morgan has some beauties, and I'm also considering Schrade.

The two Shrade Old Timers that I'm looking at are the 12OT (Pal) and 72OT (Dog Leg Jack).

Questions:

Were those two made in China? USA? Both? Is there a way to identify the American made 12OT and/or 72OT?

Also, were the American made Old Timers all carbon steel?

Thanks in advance for the continuing Schrade education!! jm

I'm no expert, but...
Imperial Schrade did make the 12OT and the 72OT. But, so does Taylor have them made in China. The USA would be on the tangstamp, if it was made here. So you just have to be aware of that part.
Most Old Timers were carbon, but in the last few years, many were made with one or more stainless blades, but NOT marked with Schrade+. Most likely because it was less expensive to blank blades from coiled 420HC, than work with 1095. :( ::shrug::

Hard to know what you're getting unless you can handle it. Some folks can rub a carbon blade, with maybe a thumb, and smell it. Otherwise, I know of no guarantee what kind of blades you're getting if they weren't assured of being older, or properly identified, until you see if they begin to form a patina.

ElLobo has given good answers here.

MOST of the older Old Timers were carbon steel, with some exceptions. Just a couple of weeks ago I purchased an original factory box of 12 93OT 'Wranglers', all mint in their own boxes. Made between 1982-1993. They were all marked Schrade+ which is stainless, that much confirmed by Robert Clemente's book.

But the knives you ask about were made of Carbon steel, unless they were late, late issues.

Thanks El Lobo and Gr8Scout!!!

As usual, my pleasure getting "taken to school" by you good folk!

The 12OTs are common on "the" auction site...the 72OTs, not seeing much of 'em.

Of course, I've, since my original post, added Queen pearls and abalones to my peanut options. Don't know how I missed those! Nice.
