littled, assuming what you are saying about heavy polish is the residue left on the stag and pins? I'll 2nd wishful's comment that it looks ok, in fact I think it looks good, but what do I know other than I like Case Trappers ::facepalm::.

I don't like the mismatch handles ( scales )on this knife. The Stag on the Shield side has no character .

Looks OK to me also . .. the mark side stag had to be a bit
"flatter" or less character to make a quality sheild installation.

Hey Larry,

I assume you mean the knife is authentic but you do not prefer that the mark side does not have gnarly stag. Am I correct?

littled,

It is not uncommon to see a CASE stag knife with gnarly pile side handles and smoother stag handle on the front. Obviously the reason behind this is that setting the shield in a piece of gnarly stag is difficult for the cutler to do with all the deep valleys and grooves. Look at the pile side of this particular knife. It would be pretty difficult to set a shield in that piece of stag. The CASE knives they managed to set a shield in the mark side with gnarly handles on both sides are far and few between in most CASE years and eras, and of course highly desired.

The CASE 1976' Razor Edge set had a grey etch which did not stand out too well against the blade. I can say one thing for sure, the master blade where the etch is has not been heavily polished or polished at all unless the etch would be faint or gone. According to my records and research, 15,000 of these knives were made. Book price $175.

Dependent on the final price, looks like a fine knife to pursue to me! But I would not personally as I don' care for the seller's history and tatics.

yes the buffing/polishing compound residue and the stag looks like its been buffed down to the pin in one spot. Thats why i like this site so many trained eyes that can spot anything that stands out in a picture. The real test will be a in-hand evaluation if it goes that far. I bought one last week that looked like a twin almost but after i got it in-hand i sent it back, it had a loose pin and the handle was coming off, would have been a easy fix but with my luck i would have cracked the stag.

The white powdery stuff may also be carnauba wax if someone buffed it with carnauba and got it on too heave and didn’t clean it up well.

It is very difficult to inlet a shield in deeply grooved stag or heavily jigged bone. It is not a task I like to do!
It does not surprise me that they put the smoother stag on the shield side.

Pins on reverse handle are noticeably larger and the handle pin at the rear bolster looks off center (too low towards the spring).

That said I think way more of the knife than the seller.

if you dont mind give it one more good look, when i zoom in on the picture that shows the inside ,second picture from the right, there appears to be a void in the stag that has been filled with wax or putty. or am i just seeing things. i haven't asked the seller any questions about it yet. does it look like someone is trying to hide something or did it just not get cleaned up before the pictures were made.
