All About Pocket Knives

This came with the Walden I recently posted. I think I stole them, at $15 for the pair...but am unashamed.
One thing they have in common is that neither have been ground on; the blades are dull but otherwise fine.

Both scales have damage, and the worst of them has been filled with (probably) epoxy. The bolsters look like CuNi. The damage is on one face and both spring edges at the hinge end; someone used it as a hammer. Most of that will buff out, I believe.

The blades are lightly stained and spotted, which is common to carbon steel. Brass liners, 3 pin scales, excellent springs and action on both blades, and NO play in either! These pics are as-found, I'll scrub it soon.

Can it be dated? No pattern number on it; I cribbed the 6227 possibility from another post in this forum.

That knife can be re-handled, sharpened and would make a nice EDC

I think its a 1935-1951 if I read the charts right. It's a nice one, I'd be proud to own and pack it!

But then again I never met a real Western I didn't like, lol.

Amen to that...most of mine are fixed-blade, and some of 'em are pretty well used up. But that just tells the real story, doesn't it? How many, many folks used them for decades...or a lifetime!

These is nothing any sadder than a mint NIB old knife, a mint old shotgun, or rifle. There is a beauty in an old knife with pocket worn scales, a few scars, and a bit of blade loss. There's something beautiful about a shotgun with faded bluing on the receiver where it's been packed afield, with a few briar scratches in the stock, and old powder residue in the chamber.

I look at my old knives and shotguns and wonder who packed them. What game did the take or skin? How many sticks have they whittled? How many generations have they been passed through?

Yep there's a beauty there that to me cannot be matched by minty fresh vintage knives. Besides, they don't get real sharp until the blade is about half worn out anyway! If you see some older gentleman pull an old knife out of his overall pocket with paper thin bone scales and worn thin blades you don't have to ask him if his knife is sharp!

I have a newer version with Delrin handles.
The handle is damaged so I will replace it when I have time.
They make awesome user knives! I love Western's carbon steel!
