All About Pocket Knives

I see that we get a lot of one time users. They are looking for information on a particular knife or subject and they quite often never heard from again. Might I suggest that a section be clearly advertised for just such a situation. Not that I want to limit membership, I just think that it might encourage someone to leave a comment or question if they do not have to go through process of "JOINING" the forum formally.

just my thoughts, you might want to ask other regular participants if this is the wrong direction or not. I feel it would encourage more comments

Here is what I did... I made it so that people can post to the Q&A section of the forum as a guest (without having to register). Under the forum description, I put "no registration required to post"... I guess maybe that will work...??? What do you think PA?

Well, that did not work out so well... Some butt heads were going nuts posting spam of various sorts under the guest feature. I know PA and El Lobo noticed and took some action (thanks!)... I went ahead and removed everything that was associated with these jerk's posts. Unfortunately, it looks like allowing non members to post may open the forums to spam, so I changed it back for now. I've got their IP addresses... If we have to, maybe some of us can go pay them a visit..

Bryan, On Many forums those IP's can be banned. You can do this here? I can ban folks from my whole domain thru my web hosting service.

You can add wild cards to the Ip's if they continue which will stop different connections that 56k folks have. Often thru the IP web host is a abuse number too. I sent a few of the posters their address and their Web IP hosts abuse email address and got some nice appoligies along with a good posts for deterants from the next prospective spammer or disgusting poster.

Normally I just let it go. When I was doing online gaming alot with kids, I had to get a little better at handling these types.

I can ban ip addresses, but I don't really want to do that if I can avoid it. I'm sure you know more about this than me, so correct me if i'm wrong. Don't some isp's tag the same ip address to numerous users??? I don't want to be banning innocent visitors. I guess I'll have to do some homework on the subject. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Spammers are my new pet peeve

Yes Bryan, there are 4 sections in the IP

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
sometimes two numbers

well if you do
xxx.xxx.xxx.*
then all IP's starting with the first three will be banned. any number in the forth area will be included. the * is a wildcard
This is not too extreme really. The odds are you wont be banning anyone who would be coming to your site except someone who lives in the same general area AND uses the same host. Actually it wont even stop a 56k user who disconnects and reconnects again. They get new numbers on the last two sets each connection.

xxx.xxx.*.*
gets a little deeper and odds become higher of banning someone you dont want. I have never had anyone complain but the one I was intending to ban even when I went that deep. However you are right in that it will ban more than the intended user.

Looks like my idea caused more problems then good. Sorry, sometimes I am better off keeping my ideas to my self

I see they struck again in an area I can't moderate. I see you took care of it though. That is the last thing we need in this forum. I have been so pleased with the comments and questions. Even after all my years in this hobby, I have learned that I don't know near enough yet. I keep reading, commenting and learning. That's what it is, all about pocket knives.... GET IT

I think it's just part of the game. Seems like there is always sombody out there trying to mess up a good thing.

I am a NEW member and saw this.Yes the guest thing is good idea.
I am not going to just be here one timer because I am learning so much from all and this SUPER place.I wish all http://www.sites were this ez to do things in.Who every set this site up tell him or her they did a real good job.
I was looking for info on knife handle care.Some say oil the knife,or use PETROLEUM JELLY on them,others say wax with RENAISSANCE.so I oiled frist ,then jellyed them.Now I under stand on stag handles just clean and wax because oil will hurt the stag handles.Now I come to the boned handles.Some real bone? some not real bone? I not know the differance they just say RED BONE on J.A. Henckeis knives.Will petroleum jell hurt them? If you have a place on this site that deals with knife care I have not found it yet.
