All About Pocket Knives

Just thought I'd share a little repair that I did recently. A member from another forum posted a rather gnarly Schrade 96OT that belonged to his dad. The knife had barely survived a house fire, and since it was a knife that the OP had given to his father a number of years ago, it had some pretty serious sentimental value to both of them. I felt rather honored when he asked if I could help, so here are the results:

The covers had pretty much melted right off, and there was some substantial rust and pitting which necessitated my grinding the Swinden rivets off the blades so that I could smooth the tangs and round ends. This of course makes the job a bit more difficult since I then had to drill the bolsters for regular through pin construction. This guy takes a mighty big pin by the way! The new covers are smooth bone, tried to keep some of the sawcuts in there for a little Old Timer look.

This sets my mind to whirling... so it is possible to "fix" the Swinden key system? I have a nearly unused 881Y that was my grandpaws. The Clip and the Sheepfoot both wiggle.
It's not the end of the world or anything.

Sure is... several of us here on this forum have been doing it for years.
I have used Swinden knives in turorials and MM even even did a video on how to repair a Swinden knife:

Thanks Dale! No, that was pre-dyed bone. I've dyed my own but it takes me forever going by the "old school" method

Dave, that may in fact be a pinned 881 if it's old enough. There are a number of ways to tighten a swinden constructed knife up without dis-assembling the whole thing, just depends on how serious the wobble is.

I am all ears Eric! I would love to know, unless it is a trade secret.
I have tried to tighten Swinden pins but never with much success except for re-pinning the knife.

The play isn't horrible but is quite noticeable.
