All About Pocket Knives

Hey all,


Perry mentioned vintage greenbone can have wide color ranges, it made think of these two. I've never been quite sure what color to call them, any suggestions?

I threw in #22, I’m sure it’s red bone. It's a 1st model framed red bone XX Trapper and clean as a whistle inside and out!

If it were me, I'd call them greenbone. Nice 54s!

I would proudly call them "mine"... I would call them greenbone also and leave it open to the observer to decide what color of green it is.

IMO the two regular frames(on top) would be classified as bone, by the time this frame came along greenbone was pretty much water under the bridge. The first model has what I would call reddish bone. All three are very beautiful. Thanks for sharing them.

This one for sure is greenbone, and a real classic! Yep, that's a tested tang stamp you see peeking out there.

The top knife actually looks like a "board knife". You'll see this a lot looking at old harware store displays were they sat for years in the light which fades the color of the bone. If it isn't that then it's a knife that was made with a weak batch of dye. I wouldn't call it anything other than "Bone".

The second knife is what I call "pretty bone". That color is found on knives from the early 60's up to around 1973.

The botton knife, first model, is a bit hard to tell from the picture. However, since it's a first model, it would be either red or green. I know that sounds ood but, all of the early knives are considered one of the two.

The 6172 is no doubt Greenbone.

All in all, that's a very nice group of Trappers and a super looking Clasp knife

Great set of three trappers gmusic . I particularly like the bone on the middle one s-k.

Hey gmusic looking at Tony Fosters price guide he has listed for the first model XX four varieties of bone consisting of ... bone, red bone, green bone, and early rogers. Since red bone is listed almost twice as much as bone, and green bone almost three times as much I'd go with red bone or green bone if it were mine
