....many knives I see advertised on E-Bay that say "Soligen Germany" on the tangs aren't actually made in Germany, but supposedly have German blades?

And on the subject....does anyone know about Owl's Head knives. Tang stamp reads "Munich, Germany".

My suspicions were confirmed. Luckily, I only bought one (a MOP sowbelly) and it had a few issues that just didn't ring true. Sloppy holes for the pins and each blade seemed to have a different snap.

Something about the Owl Heads.....

When they first came back on the market (at least on eBay), I picked one up for drill. It was marked MUNICH/GERMANY. That should've meant it was made there. I see they now appear to say MUNICH/IRONWORKS...not really signifying anything, just a name that may or may not be what it leads one to assume. I wonder if someone got nervous or had an attack of conscience?

i was thinking about getting me a decent but cheap carrying knife and was looking at some owl heads, steel warriors, and rough riders on ebay before this post ever got started. i came across this owl head immitation pearl canoe. the seller said made in germany in the auction and the main blade is stamped solingen germany but right under that is fainty etched japan???? anyway, i won the knife for 10.95 including shipping so i dont think that is too bad. i bought the knife for everyday carry, not for collecting and i have to say that the blades are sharp, tight and the snap on both blades is good and the handles show very little if any shrinkage. all in all i dont think its too bad of a carrying knife for the price i paid. the only problem i have is japan on the blade...lol but like i said, i wanted something to carry that i wouldnt cry about if i lost it and i think i got that.

another note, i also bought a couple of rough riders for 7 or 8 dollars each that i havent got yet. ive never owned any of those either, so im going to compare and will probably be keeping either the owl head or one of the rr's to carry and what i dont keep, will probably go to the big yard sale on memorial day weekend....lol.

Hey Steve,this is the first that I have heard of a Owlhead from Japan..I bought a lot that consisted of 4 Owlhead Congress pattern knives on ebay.When I received them,each knife had a blade that had a removable sticker that said made in China...I knew right away by the quality that they weren't made in Germany!! This was a couple years back,so maybe they have since contracted a company in Japan to produce them..I don't know but either way, I would much rather had one made in Japan than China!! IMO!!

i agree with you 100% on the japan versus china. i dont know how old this knife is but i was under the impression that the newer owl heads or current ones are all stamped munich ironworks which got me to thinking that this one was made before they started that stamping, but i dont know. if i was to guess, i would guess maybe around 5 to 10 yrs old. im still pondering whether im keeping it or if its going to the yardsale....lol.

i did get the two rough riders in also but im not impressed with them. they would be good for carrying which is why i bought them but i dont know if i want to pull one of them out infront of anyone...lol.

Maybe they went from making them in Germany to Japan and then ending up in China.....Hell,that reminds me of one of Clint Eastwoods movies..The Good The Bad and The Ugly!!
