All About Pocket Knives

Hey all,

I just un-wrapped this little beauty; it's the closest I’ll ever get to the real McCoy.

Licensed by Northwood’s to reproduce, they make several folders and fixed blades in the Scagel style. I also received a #1 large Jack/Barlow, what a handful for a folder! It had a couple of problems so it's going back for exchange.

I'm curious, with returns in mind; does the factory offer these "seconds" at a cut rate to dealers in hopes of passing them off?

If so, why doesn't the dealer just tell folks it has a little defect and let them make the decision to save a couple bucks, or not.

I now have two dealers I won't work with in the future because they tried to pass me defective knives. One guy tried to argue with me about “cherry picking”. I simply told him, I’m spending the money here; send me a good one or the money back, thank you.

Black list for dealers……………can-O-worms.

In regards to your questions...

I don't know of any manufacturers that ship their seconds. Good chance that some do but none of the one's that I presently deal with. Dave Shirley has the Northwoods "Scagel's" made and I don't handle those so I can't say. A lot of us do get the chance to buy overuns from some of the manufacturers and we usually blast them out at wholesale prices.

I think a good and bad dealer list is a good idea but would have to be watched closely. For example; If one customer has one bad dealing with someone I don't think that should label him as a bad dealer. While we try very hard to please everyone, you can't please all of the people all of the time. Almost all of the returns that we get is from husbands whose wife has caught them buying "another knife"

I agree with Knifekid,a bad dealer list would be hard to honestly regulate...and could POSSIBLY wind someone up in court with slander charges.

Yea, it would take some close monitoring; maybe more trouble than it's worth. Keeping it fair would be a monumental task for someone.

I like that about the wives catching there husbands with another knife, fortunately I have a good one!

Just to throw it out for thought...

Instead of a black list, perhaps a white list might be something to consider .

It could include proven good guys. The bad guys wouldn't even get mentioned, so they couldn't really say much.

Unfortunately, there would be plenty of problems to consider with this as well. For instance... I'm sure the knife community has wildly contradicting dealers whom they prefer and trust. I might have a guy on my personal "white list" who might be on 5 other people's "black list", or vise versa. I don't know...? Just thinking out loud again .

what about a rating system? something along the lines of our pole setup. from poor to excellent with no remarks.

You have to be careful what you publish. A black list could get you/us sued, and give this site a lot of grief! A bad deal is fair comment, tell everyone; but if you generalize, it's possible to be unfair to one of the parties.
I have no qualms about advertising a ripoff. And I will describe carefully and completely what happened, without getting personal, or making general statements. People still get the picture!!

We have a rating system in the produce business through a company called the Produce Reporter. They publish the "Blue Book." It’s the bible of produce companies.

Briefly, this is how it works. If you have traded with a company, that entitles you to rate that company based on ability, integrity, honesty, etc. You simply fill out a form giving them 1, 2, 3, or 4 Xs, 4 Xs being the best companies to deal with. When I'm looking for a new contact, guess what I look for first. The reports are averaged; the X rating is printed in the Blue Book. The book covers much more than the X rating, but I think we could get by on that.

Of course, we wouldn't need a book. We have this site. Seems simple enough. Like Johnnie said, a poll would suffice, but only folks that have actually traded with that company being polled could participate. We could work on the honor system....after all, it's one of the things we look for in a dealer. Otherwise, proof would be needed in order to vote in the poll. It could be done with eBay dealers as well and maybe updated (new poll) every six months.

Going to create a lot of work for someone........but what a tool!

Very nice gmusic I have 3 Northwoods on order and several here at the house..Queen has made most of their stuff but they have purchased more equipment to allow them to hand craft the knives in their Gladstone, Michigan shop...If you have not checked out their site I encourage folks to check it out..They have introduced some very nice folders lately..

Do you have the Barlow? Man that sucker is a handful for a folder! They have done a real nice job, whoever is making them.

One more manufacture to consider.

Where are they having that intervention? I've got it bad..............

BTW gmusic, I have several of Northwoods "Scagel" folders, and that one you pictured above is my hands down favorite. It fills the hand, but pockets well. The Barlow is nice but needs a pouch or sheath IMO.
Oupa split a Barlow into two one blades, and it makes a great EDC also!
Here is one half, in buttery ebony!
The second and third ones in the group shot are samples never produced, a desert ironwood, and a small single blade with the same handle pattern.

There's something about that full stag handled no bolster look that's appealing to me.

You are right, that #1 Barlow needs a belt holder of some sort! Is that a knife in your pocket, or are you just................well, won't go there.

Your fouth one from the top, is it a #3? It looks just like mine.

Yes, a number 3. I carried a different #3 for 6 months after I got it; a great EDC!!

Ok you guys got me drooling now..Here is one I have coming next week, the bone Scagel repro on the left.I have the one in stag but I have always wanted this Scagel bone folder as well, I believe only 25 were produced in bone handles..I had to borrow the pics from Vintageknives until I get it at the house to take a few photos.

Another of my favorite Scagel repro's is this ivory folder compliments of a great knifer friend who helped me out while I was looking for one..
