All About Pocket Knives

A good friend asked me to help identify a knife that had belonged to his uncle. I've not been a successful as I had hoped. There are a lot of Edge Brand knives on e-bay and they are available at about any price. This one is obviously used and the value is not the question. How old and who actually made this knife? Some articles point to Gutmann Cutlery of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. as the importer from multiple knife makers. Also noted was this took place somewhere between the 1950's and the 80's and that the name "Edge Brand" was actually a house brand used by the importer. The knife appears to have honest stag handles and is well made. Its' overall length is 10 3/16" and the blade measures 6 1/4"+/- and is made of 3/16" stock.

Are we close to any correct assumptions ? There are even a few in the AAPK stores but with no history.

Thanks gringo, the Bowies by Wingen all seem to have a different hilt than this one. Anton Wingen, Jr. is a new name to me, some interesting history there .

You answered your own question

They were imported by Guttman Cutlery Co. 1947-97.

Some are marked with a model number on the reverse tang like yours and some are stamped G.C. Co.

Another thank you to Miller Bro's! Updated my friend last evening with what little we know about the knife and he told me his uncle had a bunch of goodies from WW2 and that he was in law enforcement in Ga. in later years. The knife would fit more in the time frame of his law enforcement career (probably found it layin' on the floor, in a juke joint and nobody seemed to know where it came from ). Logically narrowing it down, maybe .
