All About Pocket Knives

What`s the best way to go about filling and stabilizing a pincrack in bone ? I was going to wash it with mild soapy warm water to remove any contamination , blow it out with compressed air and attempt to fill it with superglue . Any tricks or advice would be helpful . I read here to heat the knife and refrigerate the glue but would like to here from you guys on this before I try it so as to get a good strong bond and not make it worse . Thanks , JJ

zap a gap has worked well for me. alcohol can be used to degrease

is that zap o gap thinner / better than name brand superglue or better ?? and does climate make a differnce

The pink bottle has the thinnest glue in it. Takes a while to build it up, but it is formulated to penetrate into cracks. It works well.

I usually start with the pink and then finish up with the green to fill in.

You can also get the kicker to help cure the glue faster.

It is a cyanoacrylate glue formulated to fill gaps. I think the quality is significantly better than the consumer grade adhesive you can buy at big box stores. The Zap-a Gap glues are about the only cyanoacrylate glues I use.

I will try and find some locally . fyi I was fooling around with trying to color the CA glue and found that a brown sharpie pen worked . it took to the glue , dried fast and worked good in layers . best on dark materials . glue then color then glue . Thanks guys !

I see on line that Michael's hobby stores carries Zap-A-Gap.
If you don't have a Michael's locally you might try other hobby stores.

I have used just the green before & it works well, I just like to get some of the thin glue in the crack to build up from the bottom upwards in the crack.
If all you can find is the green, you can still get it stabilized.

I found a bottle of the pink at the local fly fishing & tackle shop , I guess they use it to mend line with . Great stuff and super thin ..... Repair and stabalization success !! here`s a after shot Thanks again all , JJ

Same knife no clamp since it was a tight crack . I put a drop at one end of the crack and then used a stickpin to draw it down to the other end rather than trying to just pour it on . this worked well to help confine the glue to just the area needed then wiped it with my finger . I wasn't looking for perfection just stability ...... but it did come out fairly un detectable

I've got a Canal Street with a cracked smooth bone handle. Anyone want to use it for a tutorial ? I'll pay the postage.

I think it would be nearly impossible to "mask" the repair on smooth bone ...... the texture and color on these handles really lent to the success of this repair . if stabilization is the goal and cosmetics not that important , you know like if it`s a sentimental knife it would work out o.k. but be more noticed . I got lucky on this `n

Very well done wiseguy! As Glenn said, you can't even tell it had a crack at all.

I am re-handling an old knife with ebony, which has a lot of natural checking in the wood.
I have given it 2 coats of the thin pink Zap-A-Gap and sanded it with 1000 grit in between and it is looking really good.
