All About Pocket Knives

Hello everybody.

I have been picking up quite a few fixed blade knives where I thought they were either cheap or one that fit in my collection (Greenbone Case, pre-WW2).
I recently got a Marble's Ideal cheap and the pommel on it is loose to the extent the pommel can be rotated a little less than a quarter of a turn.
Is there a "Pommel Wrench" available where I can tighten the retaining nut down and stop its looseness??
I also see that different makers used different sized retaining nuts. So, just what all do I need to be able to do this for most of the major American makers??

Any help would sure be appreciated. Thank you all in advance, Eric

Easy to make. I used an old stub srewdriver and filed the notch in the blade with a pattern file.Takes about 10 minutes.You can buy cheap straight screwdrivers and convert them so you have different sizes if you like.This one fits a bunch of different knives I own. You don't need a lot of torque to tighten those nuts so the stubby works fine.

That would be called a "spanner screwdriver" instead of a spanner wrench woulden't it, k7k?
A "sloted screwdriver" would surely be mis concieved.

TY Joe. Technically speaking a wrench is a "spanner" in British parlance.Just as in the USA there are many types of wrenches so are there spanners.

Dimitri: No doubt that would be a handy little tool to own but the price is a bit steep compared to the cost of 3 used screwdrivers. Of course not everyone would have access to a set of pattern files either but it could be roughed out with a hacksaw too.You could probably use the file blade on a Leatherman multitool to finish it up.

I've always liked the challenge of making a tool to fit a particular need I have at the moment.Once I needed a tool to remove the nut holding a windshield wiper pivot on my 55 Pontiac which is very similar to this tool for tightening the nuts on pommels only a bit larger.I finally settled on a 1/2" black pipe nipple which just fit over the pivot. I cut off the threaded portion and filed two projections around the edge to fit into the slots in the nut.Worked like a charm! I'm sure they sell a tool to do this job but I would wager it was a bit more expensive than the 75 cents I paid for the pipe nipple.

Made mine from a metal curtain rod bracket. Had this lying around in the junk drawer. Only needed to file the sides. The center slot was the right size.

Being a cheapskate, I watch for sales on those hex-headed-insert screwdriver bits, and grind them to fit whatever I need. I've had to do a lot of these for the nuts on saw handles, probably have 1-20 scattered around (it is usually easier to make a new one than to figure out where the correct one is!). The slot can be cut with a file, a hacksaw, cutoff wheels on a dremel, or even a re-shaped cutoff wheel in an angle grinder. Whatever works. . . .

Needle nosed pliers would work or pliers for spring clips, etc.

Thanks Dimitri. I appreciate the link to the supplier. With the name of them I can look around the net for the best buy and it wouldn't surprise me to see some on ebay. I guess everybody has a different sense of values and it's easier for me to pop the $12.50 for one than to spend the time and effort to run down the junk and cobble something together. When I ended up cripped up I disposed of a lot of my tools other than some real basic stuff to keep around the household and I live in a small apartment; no room to do much at all. Best, Eric
