The workmanship that went into these old knives is incredible!

These examples came up for sale recently on an online auction, pictures posted here for posterity.

I saw those listings. Some very good knives in that auction. Also some fakes and rebuilds too as well as amateur cleaning jobs. The reserves were astronomical. Beautiful knives though.

Thanks for saving those pictures for us Dimitri.I agree Robert the reserves were as you said astronomical.I heard this was the 3rd time they tried selling those knives.I personally liked the two ivory IXLs.

Man they caould make a knife now can't they.

Man D, those ivory IXL's are killer. I'd give every IXL I'd ever had for just one of those beauties.

Cleaned, reworked or not, I wouldn't know from Adam, but those, my friends, are some absolutely gorgeous pieces of pocket cutlery.

Those are fantastic! Anyone who has one of those works of art in their collection is very fortunate. Sadly, this beat-up old Marsh Bros. is probably as close as I'll ever come to owning anything close to those beauties.

Beautiful knives! dcgm4, that one may be beat up but still has lot's of character. I like the way the pearl and bolsters are fluted to match.

All beauties but that IXL coke bottle jack among the others really trips my hair pin trigger ... actually what am I saying - I can only hope to own one like one of any of those ... glad you brought it back to the top as I never saw this thread...

Thanks, Dan and Lee. It certainly does have character as you've pointed out. I like to imagine that when it was in its heyday (brand new, blades and bolsters shiny, perfect mother-of-pearl) it must've been a real looker.

Dimitri, you have superb Sheffield knives. Do you have a secret source ? or were all these discovered on ebay ?
