Fine steel wool will remove the loose rust and won't scratch.

Moved to proper forum.

I'd suggest starting the rust removal process using a No. 2 lead pencil. Serious.......rub the rust with the point of the pencil. It will remove the rust without scratching the metal. You might want to apply a coat of oil and let that soak overnight before using the pencil as the oil will soften and loosen the rust a bit.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Number 2 pencil is super good, have used it since I found out about it
from the above post person. Thanks Phil or was it Jerry, don't remember

Could have been either one of us. We're both cheerleaders for that process. I got it from someone else on AAPK a few years ago. You're right Phin, works great unless the rust has started to get crusty and pit. Then ya gotta scrape it off with another knife or something.

You know, I believe it was Willie who 1st mentioned using a pencil to remove rust.

Yep Ray........gotta give credit where credit is due. It was Owd Wullie who first proposed that treatment as I recall. It works like a charm.

tried the pencil trick on a lighter rust mirror finished ulster and it worked great
for this one I resorted to a softer blade steel scraper knife (Imperial Ireland) then steel wool
and yes I had oiled it first with my fav., ATF

previously I had scratched a -H.M.SLATER- using a -NORVEL SHAPLEIGH- as a scraper obviously the diamond edge was no exaggeration
the only problem now is
I took the whole thing apart (rescale, whitetail antler)
Found lots of hard scale rust on the center liner and the springs; used the wire wheel on the springs, but burned my fingers trying to do the liner on the wheel so went back to the ulster scraper and got it clean. Trying to find a piece of brass lying around to fabricate a new center
on the plus side
all I lack is finishing up junebug your pics and mm video have created a monster

Was the center liner not brass?

You may be able to find a similar-in-size/shape knife that you could take an old brass liner from. I also use the outer scales sometimes, and just pop off the bolsters. Those make decent liners in a pinch.

(Oh, and I use gloves when buffing brass parts. They do get hot..)

the center liner is steel, hence the rust
I did not wish to overheat the steel (I thought) on the wire brush is why I was not wearing gloves;did not really burn them just warmed them up a little
am gonna try filling the worn area with silver solder as it should be as durable as the brass on the other side
thanks for the suggestion about bolster from another knife that would easily work
my idea is to keep the steel center as that is how it was originally
