All About Pocket Knives

I have a new computer and am still in training, so I may not be able to download the photos!
Question I have is: this knife is quite nice except no snap on the main blade. I found it on the beach while vacationing with my family in Capistrano this last week. I worked it over and got most of the rust off with Simichrome polish and a towel on a workbench, so I didn't buff it with anything very abrasive! It is worth having one of the gurus here work it over? Goins says it is 1960 to 1976. Some machine work on the liners make me think it may have some potential as a collector piece. I will add more photos when I find out how!

DaveO .That is a knife you don't see on ebay very often I have two and one made for Powrkraft.I have not seen one in new condition.

Dave -- The 80 is a 72 all dressed up for a party. It has nickel silver bolsters like a 72 but then they added nickel silver liners (milled) and nickel silver pins. As you have noticed, the middle liner is also milled on the back. It is called the DeLuxe Carpenter's and Whittler's knife. It was made from 1954 until 1965 or shortly after. The early ones had bone handles. I would love to get my hands on one of those but I've never seen one.

There were several patterns that were given that treatment and called DeLuxe, the 28, 30, 69, 80, 81, 82 and 83. I think the 69 lasted the longest.

As Grant said, the 80 doesn't show up for sale very often. You found yourself a relatively rare knife there. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a value that reflects their rarity. I think that's due to a lack of demand.

I have a compulsive need to fix the spring on the main blade. Should I just forget it? What would you do?

It's more than likely not the spring but the tang that's causing the problem. They tend to get worn down on these knives. I thought I had a picture around here that shows what to look for but can't find it right now.

Open and Close the blade. Watch the back spring. Does it only rise slightly or not at all? If so, the tang on the blade is your problem and the blade needs to be replaced. Only problem with that is the Camillus blades with a long line are getting harder to find.

Make that two more Tommy because they also made an 80 for Montgomery Ward with the Powr-Kraft stamp. It's probably harder to come by than the Camillus 80.

Nickel-silver liners are pretty rare. Mostly you just see brass. This is the first Camillus I've seen with them.

The Remingtons had them with the Pyremite handles, and you see pearl whittlers like that, but almost all stock knives, cattle knives, penknives etc...have brass.

I knew it was the worn tang, but just got passive and said spring, because the tang is not pressing the spring to make it snap shut. I will be more specific in the future. Any one have an extra blade?

Tom Williams has some but none from that era and the rest of his are not Camillus stamped. Wallace Rockwell just sold me his last one from that era. You might try Dale (orvet).

I should have been more specific. What Tom has are the newer 72 blades with the double line tang stamp and flat ground on both sides. I think you would find the whole knife before you would find just the 80 blade with the 80 stamped on the back.

I am not a Camillus person, and need to share this with someone who would make it an item in their collection. Jerryd send me your personal address and I will bomb you !
