All About Pocket Knives

Ok, this guy on ebay, cbjprock, has some absolutely BEAUTIFUL, Camillus custom work up on eBay at the moment. Here is just one of his knives made with sheep horn. http://www.ebay.com/itm/McGrew-Large-Lo ... 19e23c529c
If this knife doesn't sell for more than $250.00, I would be surprised.

I wanted to bid last time on one of his Camillus Custom marlin spike/riggers knife but it sold for 193.00. He has two listed now, one scaled with stag and the other with beautiful yello-jaket delrin. And of course the stag handled riggers knife:

Boy he does do some super fine work.

Did you see his old business card from Camillus?
This is Wallace Rockwell. He did most of the custom knives at Camillus and the prototypes.

I have done some trading with him. I got my Camillus pin spinners from him.
He seems like a real nice guy, and a very talented knife maker. He worked at the Camillus factory for many years I believe.

He is to Camillus what Herman Williams is to Schrade; only I think he may have been a bit more involved at the factory than Herman was at Schrade. I am not sure of the extent of involvement Herman had at Schrade. Also I am not sure if Herman did a lot of prototypes for Schrade.

I did see he business card. He actually sends one out with every eBay win. I'm hoping his current list of knives don't go to high. I desperately want that yellow riggers knife.

Could you imagine the bidding/fighting going on if he did a custom #72 and put it up on eBay? Jerry might have a heart attack.

I'm having twinges just thinking about it.

My first thought on the yellow handle riggers knife is that looks like something that would have come from the factory that way but I scrolled through the catalogs and didn't see it.

I agree, Wallace is a great craftsman. I was talking to him this past weekend at the Syracuse NY gun show. Nice gentleman.

The bigger question is what handles to put on a custom 72. The knife is really too small for stag to be spectacular. Black lip pearl maybe? Any other thoughts?

That's a good suggestion, however, if I'm going to blow that kind of money, I want it to show. Think bling.

I would want one of the old scout whittlers with the original first class sign done in abalone.

Jim -- I'm not a wood kind of guy but pre-ban elephan ivory, warthog, hippo, walrus or narwhal ivory (edit: illegal to import Narwhal ivory to the US) would look good. I've always wanted something in abalone so that's something to consider along with the black lip pearl. Any one of those would make a real party girl out of one of these old gals.

I feel bad that I forgot all about this custom #72 that WB (whitebuffalo58) did and gifted to me back in July of '12. I have a couple of dozen knives that are very cherished and this is one of them. He swapped out the coping blade for a sheepfoot blade and handled it in Whitetail antler. He replaced the small clip with a pen blade and I think the main clip came from a stockman. It's tight, snappy and a pleasure to hold and fondle, especially knowing where it came from. I love it Rob. Thank you.

Here is a Camillus #16 I did earlier this year-
This is a Camillus Life Raft knife I customized last year- This is a #23 That I put stag on- This is a Camco Barlow that I added some stag for handles- This is a Camco sheepfoot Barlow that I put stag on- I really like working on Camillus knives because they are honest solid knives that have a lot of potential!

Nice work Dale. That Camco Barlow really stands out.

Camillus is an everyday working man's knife. Hot dogs, apple pie, Chevrolet and Camillus knives.

Well, for Pete's sake. I missed posting these here. How could I have overlooked that? As I've mentioned in other threads, these were done by Wallace Rockwell, a long time Camillus employee who ran the custom shop for them.

The first one is a Camillus 1047 Scout done in pre-ban elephant ivory.

This one is a Camillus 72 done in Gold Lip Pearl donated by Dale (orvet) with bolsters carved by Damon Soileau. The bolster carving is as difficult to capture as the fire in the pearl.

Ya' know Jerry, I like those more & more every time I see them!

Wallace did an OUTSTANDING job on those knives!

This whole knife business is one big slippery slope. I am so pleased with what Wallace did and Damon did for me I can barely stand myself. On top of that, when I saw what Rex did with that Seneca Cutlery Scout my first impulse was to send a PM to him asking if he would be willing to do the same to an old pre-war Imperial I have. I had to get a grip on myself because something like that is out of reach right now. Go ahead. Tell me beautiful knives don't affect you in much the same way.
