All About Pocket Knives

I spotted this knife on ebay and there are a couple of things that set off my radar. First, I've never seen another Canal Street knife in this pattern in any handle material. Second, the tang stamp just doesn't look right to me.

I may be all wet on this one, and to be honest I hope I am, because if it is what I suspect then I've just spotted my first fake Canal Street. Somebody tell me if it's real or not.

Phil -- The guy claims, " It was purchased at the 2005 Blade Show from the Canal Street booth. They had made a whole set of Mother of Pearl knives for display." That should be easy enough to verify. Call CSC this morning and ask them if they made the knife.

So I just called CSC and 2005 was too long ago for the lady that answered the phone so she said she will have Walter Gardiner (the owner) to call me back. I'll let you know what he has to say.

Phil -- Gina (I think) at CSC just called me back. She said Wally told her he can't remember specifics but the knife looks like some stuff they did for the Blade Show that year. It was made within the first couple of months after CSC start up and at the time they were buying parts from Queen and finishing them in-house. She said she had looked at the auction and that knife is a Queen pattern which would fit right in with what they were doing during the start-up period. She wouldn't commit herself (can ya blame her?) but was pretty sure the knife is genuine and one of the first knives CSC made. Her parting comment was, "I'd snatch that knife up."


For posterity, this is the text of the listing description: "This Canal Street Cutlery Co. Dog Leg Jack Knife is beautiful. It was purchased at the 2005 Blade Show from the Canal Street booth. They had made a whole set of Mother of Pearl knives for display. I was lucky enough to get one of them. The knife is 3 ½ inches long closed. It has two polished stainless steel blades, polished stainless bolsters. It has scalloped liners. The mother of pearl is great looking. It had never been used or sharpened, comes with all original paper work, box and pull string jewelers pouch. Just as it was in 2005 at the blade show. Canal Street knives are hand assembled in the USA at 30 Canal Street, Ellenville, NY."


Edit: I almost forgot. She also said the tang stamp is correct for the period. She told me that during start-up they were etching the tang stamp on while they waited for the stamps to be made and delivered.

LOL, it is a great knife but a bit overpriced. Unless like Phil said you have a money tree

Well guys, after more than a year of off and on haggling over that knife, I finally managed to purchase it at MY price! It has been listed several times on ebay with a Buy It Now or Make an Offer listing. I'd make an offer and the seller would reject my offer. The last couple of times it came up, I didn't even bother doing that. Then last week it showed up again. Same deal as before, Buy It Now price or Make an Offer. I made my standard offer and to my shock and amazement this time the seller accepted my offer promptly.
The knife arrived in my mailbox yesterday and I'm tickled with it. The seller even included the original purchase reciept from the 2005 Blade Show. It's in perfect condition, and now, thanks to Jerry's excellent research, I'm confident I have the earliest Canal Street in my collection.

Great knife Philco, glad it's going to a good home. I did post an early proto with an etch instead of a stamp. These knives are scarce and worth keeping an eye out for.
